I have always opted for gangster rap mainly because the production was 10x better than the backpacker trash. Also the preachy lyrics are typically annoying as fuck.

HOWEVER, this past year I have been extremely impressed with the production of Sabzi, the beat making side to the Blue Scholars. He's got a little mix of soul, brass and even a little bit of adrenaline thrown in there too. So I bought an album the other day called "Common Market" because I saw he was on the prouction credits. Just like with the Blue Scholars, he hasn't disappointed me with this album.

Sabzi deserves to be mentioned in the conversation for best producer in the Northwest.

The Blue Scholars are my dudes. They have been bringing some serious heat for a minute now. Sabzi's music is sick. I think cats are sleeping on his production skills. After all he did produce one of the best selling hip-hop records in Seattle last year. Like em or not they do sell out shows on a regular baisis and are always on the road. I would put Sabzi in the top 5 producers in Seattle right now just on that alone. Thats just my two cents though.

SABZI IS DOPE.

Hes my favorite producer outta the northwest. Hes a real intelligent and solid guy. Common Market is RA Scion with Sabzi doing production. They performed with KRS-ONE (i think) the last time he rolled through Seattle. Best hip hop in seattle right now.

Some of them are not bad. But I don't get down with mixing politics and music, and Backpackers seem to be the most self-righteous, we-know-what-is-best-for-you type people in the entire scene. Most can't go 7 bars without mentioning how so-and-so is a liar, the media is brainwashing you, and so on. I can't stand their constant pontification.

I will give Blue Scholars music a listen and see what is happening.

TRUE STATEMENT

But what separates the Blue Scholars and specifically Sabzi's beats (that Common Market album is dope) from the rest of that preachy trash, is that the music overtakes the politics.

I don't know exactly how you seperate the politics from the scholars and common market. Theyre both politically charged and socially concious rap that has something to say. If you don't like that kind of music I don't know how you can stand them still.

In One Word: Beats

Beats for that genre of rap music typically suck, in their case thanks to Sabzi, the beats are excellent. That is enough for me to overcome some of that lyrical annoyingness.

But to be honest, the only track where it really bugs me is "Proletariat" which lyrically is a pretty pathetic sob song about having low-paying jobs as a teenager.
