Poll: What should Oklahoma City's team name be?

By J.E. Skeets

Recently, there's been a lot of talk about what the NBA and Clay Bennett will rename the un-Sonics of Oklahoma City — OKC Marshalls? Seriously? — so I decided we should put it to a vote. Below are five random OKC team name ideas to choose from, but feel free to go with "other" and leave your own suggestions in the comments. In fact, I completely expect "other" to win.

Oklahoma City Aviators. A Ball Don't Lie reader "Sky P" suggestion, this name really rolls off the tongue. I like it. It not only pays homage to the state's aviation history, but head coach P.J. Carlesimo would look spectacular struttin' up and down the sidelines in some aviator shades and a bomber jacket.

Oklahoma City Bandits. Because the Oklahoma City Trail of Tears Destination That Became the Former Indian Territory That Was Later Stolen Under the General Allotment Act would be difficult to squeeze on a jersey. (Credit: C. Flashy)

Oklahoma City Barons. What is a Baron? Good question. Trusty Wikipedia says a Baron is a specific title of nobility. The word baron comes from Old French baron, itself from Frankish baro meaning "freeman, warrior"; it merged with cognate Old English beorn meaning "nobleman." Um, OK. But what does Rex Banner think of the slick mock jerseys?

Oklahoma City Thundercats. As the dying planet of Thundera (Sonics) meets its end, the fleet (team) is attacked by the Mutants of Plun-Darr (Bennett, the Mutants of Stern-Darr), who destroy all crafts (hope) save for the flagship (franchise) containing the young Lord of the Thundercats, Lion-O (Durant), his protectors (Green, Westbrook), and the source of the Thundercats' power, the mystical Eye of Thundera (Shawn Kemp's libido?). Although the Mutants damage the flagship (Seattle, franchise), they are driven back by the power of the Eye (money) to the safety of the world of "Third Earth" (Oklahoma). Ho!

Oklahoma City !'s. "A couple of young basketball players win the hearts of their sweetheart fans in the Oklahoma territory." Works for me.

So, what do you think Oklahoma City's new team name should be? There are no wrong answers!

Funny, cus thats how i feel abou the Armpit of the Midwest/South....better known as Oklahoma.

all you do is trade future hall of famers and whine about losses
you fags are worse than oregon.
Future hall of famers? In what sport? Please lay some examples down.

at least they tend to stay relevant in sports discussions..
Oregon? They have a NBA team and a Ducks team that cant make it to a NC to save their lifes. The Ducks werent even relevant til 1994. You still mad that your onside kick didnt work out?

whens the last time people even speak about the huskies?
Last year when Jake Locker was Pac-10 FOY.

I agree. FUCK WSU.

the sonics bailed on you hoes and the seahawks are garbage.
LOL @ this. Now i KNOW youre just reaching for shit to be a douche bag...last time i checked, the Hawks have won the NFC West 4 years and running, and made it to the SB in the last 4 years. When was the last time OKC did any of that? LOL @ you just NOT getting a PRO team. OKC = FAIL

the mariners? LOL
Youre right, cus it aint like they hold a tie for the most games won in a season...oh wait...

all that money, land, and time on your hands up there and you continue to fuck it up.
LOL @ directing this at ME like I have any control over those things.

You are the most irrelevent person that posts in this forum next to 3 other limp-dick faggots. Why are you even here? Because your sleezy, fat, redneck business man and his band of liars worked with the crooked politicians of Seattle to steal the Sonics away?

Here is a question for ya,what happens when OKC becomes the next Sac, Memphis, or NO? What happens when the excitement of having a pro team for the first tiem EVER wears off and the OKC ___ CANT win? Then what?

Now all of a sudden, Bennett will be asking the people of OKC to fund a $500+ million for a LOSING franchise...and no one is going to want to pony up. Why? Cus only an IDIOT would say "hey, you pay for this stadium while i reap all the benfits". Quite honestly, if it wernet for oil, Bennett would be just another fuckin broke businessmen tryin to sell hub caps on the side of the road.

So, have fun watching this franchise LOSE year in and year out, all the while Bennett realizing that sports teams are MONEY PITS...ask Jay-Z.

Meanwhile, My Hawks will...well...PLAY. While OKC's NFL team...doesnt EXIST.

Sucks to be you, now doesnt it?

_

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- An Oklahoma City media outlet, KOCO-TV, has reported the city's relocated NBA team will be named the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 2008-09 season.

The "Thunder," formerly the Seattle SuperSonics, are in the middle of a full-scale move from the Northwest to Oklahoma. According to KOCO.com, the NBA's Internet division -- through CSC Corporate Domains -- secured the domain names of "okcthunderbasketball.com" and "okcthunderbasketball.net" on July 10.

The "Thunder" were officially granted permission to leave Seattle last month, the result of an out-of-court settlement between Sonics majority owner Clay Bennett and the city of Seattle. In return, Seattle gets to retain the "Sonics" name, logo and team colors (green and gold) and could receive up to $45 million in the next several years, as penalty for Bennett breaking the lease agreement with KeyArena, the Sonics' home for nearly two decades.

The city of Seattle originally wanted to keep the Sonics at KeyArena for two more years. The Sonics' season-ticket holding base even filed a class-action lawsuit against Bennett and the other team owners at one point.

NBA trademarks six nicknames for Oklahoma City franchise
Jul 25, 8:20 pm EDT
OKLAHOMA CITY (TICKER) —The NBA filed for trademarks on six nicknames for Oklahoma City’s new franchise, The Oklahoman reported on Friday.

Citing the United States Trademark and Patent Office, the newspaper said that the league filed for a trademark on Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.

It has been rumored in the last few weeks that the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics is leaning toward Thunder, but the NBA would not reveal that information.

“The NBA will not have a comment on this until a nickname is selected,” NBA senior director of basketball communications Tim Frank told the newspaper.

Citing a source close to team ownership, Oklahoma City’s ABC affiliate previously reported that the “registrar for all of the NBA’s Internet domain names were reserved okcthunderbasketball.com and okcthunderbasketball.net on July 10,” suggesting that the franchise will soon be renamed.

The franchise left the Pacific Northwest after an ugly court case ended with an agreement between the team and the city of Seattle, which released the club from its lease at KeyArena - the crux of the disagreement.

In the court case, the city of Seattle had been seeking to hold the owners of the Sonics to the remaining two years of the team’s KeyArena lease and Sonics’ season-ticket holders also filed a class-action lawsuit that contended they were tricked into buying tickets under the belief that the team would be staying in the Pacific Northwest.

Sonics majority owner Clay Bennett and his ownership group alleged the team was losing money at KeyArena, thereby necessitating a move to Oklahoma City.

However, the Sonics and the city of Seattle came to an agreement on July 2, just hours before a district court judge was to issue a verdict on the six-day trial.

As per the agreement, the Oklahoma City franchise agreed to leave the Sonics’ name, logo and colors behind for a potential future NBA franchise in Seattle.
