Nano Ipods are basically SMALLER (Width of a pencil); smaller in size and storage capacity (2GB/500 MP3s or 4GB/1000 MP3s). It has the same capabilities of an regular Ipod, but in miniature form. On the other hand, a regular Ipod is much bulkier and can store much more MP3s/Pictures (depending on the type of Ipod you get). The older models weren't in color and didn't have the capability of storing pictures. I have a 60GB Ipod Photo and that can hold 15,000 MP3s or 25,000 Pictures.

The regular Ipods now only come in 20GB or 60GB. The also have an Ipod Shuffle which can only store 512MB. The downside on the Ipod Shuffle is that you cannot see what song you are listening to. Imagine searching for a praticular song you want to listen to without a screen!!

So basically the Nano Ipod is a miniature version of a regular Ipod, but an upgrade from the Ipod Shuffle. If you don't have that much songs to put in an Ipod and don't plan on putting a huge library in the future then an Ipod Nano is the way to go. It is lighter/thinner than a regular Ipod and can be stored in your purse or pocket.

^You forget the most important part. It has flash memory instead of a hard drive which will make it more durable. Hard drives have moving parts and also 1 drop of an ipod thats not a Nano could kill it.
