Wearing a scarf is a very old tradition even in Christian and Judaism. It stems from not being seen as a lustful object, which proving from many siccness threads, women who show their hair and skin (even while wearing normal clothes) can be looked at with lust easier than women who cover their body and hair.
So when the White settlers told the Native Americans that their long hair and traditional leather clothing was 'not right' and cut off every single girls and guys hair the same, and put them in "traditional" European clothing, this isn't the same idea of intolerance?
EVERYONE MUST BE THE SAME!
If these Native American children's parents didn't agree then they would have no help with their settlement, and that means they would be subject to not learning English, and not being able to participate in the new evolving economy and society that was forced upon them.
