rap is boring because so many ppl aare using the same formula - hook - 16 - hook - 16 - hook - 16 rappin over a 2 track

the reason why its hurting is cause theres not enough creativity
Because the music industry is dying FAST. The industry recognizes this and is forced to squeeze whatever profit they can out of the music.

A few years ago, a label could afford to take an artistic risk hoping it would pay off. Can't do that now. The mainstream is in a state where it has to maintain the dumbed down, formulaic product to ensure the highest profit margin.

The music industry as we once knew it is D E A D. Hate to be the one to say it but it's true.

thats fucked up logic: the industry is dying so we're just gonna be cheap make crappy music cause no one is buying it anyways

take kanye for example. his songs are crazy production wise, and he sells records. i was watching this youtube video of just blaze where he had a live orchestra playing some shit, and just blaze sells records.

better music = more sales.

That's not the logic though. The decision isn't to consciously make "crappy music" it's to make what is going to sell. What makes money is always #1 Priority, especially when you're trying to SAVE your business from tanking as the music industry is in the process of doing right now.

You may feel the quality of the music is lacking (and it is) but that's not the logic with which the labels are putting their projects together.

The video of Just Blaze was either for the track he's doing for Fabolous album (which is getting the push back treatment right now) or for the Nike Commercial that Just Blaze did the music for. He had tracks on Jay-Z's album but they weren't HITs, they were just high profile. Same with his track on Diddy's album. Yeah Just Blaze sells records but it has nothing to do with anything other than having placements on high profile projects. Where's that Saigon album???

better music definetly = more sales but even better promotion and marketing = way more sales. Some of the dopest albums I've heard didn't seem to have a great marketing plan which to me is what caused lack of sales. If people do music cause they just love it then they shouldn't even try to sell it.giev it away.just my opinion.

i think you just need a vacation and some time away from it before you ready to work on more shit and it doesn't feel like a chore.....i was feeling same way for a while.....being in the studio every night engineering for a lotta folks got to be a chore and took away from the fun aspect of it.....when it came down to mixing my own material i felt too lazy to do it any more and lost my enthusiasm......ive thought about giving up on it completely myself a few times but after a few days maybe weeks my attitude changes and my love for the music reemerges and brings me bacc to it again...

I disagree. Better marketing and promotion budget / scheme along with higher visibility = more sales. The right kind of money behind a less than average project , can sell quite a bit of an album.

in theory that works....nowadays its more harder to break a record like that..if thats the case then why isnt mos def and others doing big numbers....and define better music

i like to think that its true but looking at todays market, its hard to tell

i'm sorry that last mos def album was trash, they ain't even buy inserts for that weak ass disc! as for what makes an artist better, lyrics, beats, reality, uniqueness, relavance to the world around them. saying something that everyone can relate to. 10M ppl bought GRODT cause they felt 50's pain. Same with Em. Same with Kanye. Same with TI. Same with BIG. Same with Pac. Those artists are able to combine all of the elements of rap together in a way that lots of ppl relate to their story or their point of view, and that's what makes them great artists to me. If you never sold dope, lived the street life, or even hung out in the park and drank a 40 you can still relate to what those artists are saying.

here's some evidence in the quality music / street buzz VS radio play argument

case 1
young buck vs mims 1st week
140k 77k

mims had the #1 single in the country but still couldn't sell a million saying nothing on the track. buck didn't have a lot of airplay and sold 2x as much offa street buzz. btw i was in la the week mims dropped and a lot of industry folks were surprised he basically flopped, which is good.

case 2
nas - hip hop is dead. one recycled single, minimal airplay. still sold platinum or close to it.

case 3.
jibbs, d4l, franchise boys, even e-40 all had monster singles and didn't go gold or took them 1/2 a year to go gold.

case 4
camorn and lil flip's last albums were both trash, and they sold accordingly (flips scanned a whole 44k 1st week, guess he really do need his)

For me, the reason to re-think my situation was the type of people who are in this business. There are some real bad people who are involved with this business. I mean the less desireable people who always try to get something for nothing, or try to use the negative means to get what they want. The older I get the more I realize that hanging out with a bunch of goons all day is not the life I want to lead. That is why I have stepped back and just stay on the business end of things, and not around a bunch of people who are not positive people. I fuck with people who are going places, so should u.
