September 1, 2006) *Even though it was a fairly tame (MTV) Video Music Awards by its own standards inside Radio City Music Hall Thursday night, outside it was on and poppin'. Rapper and actor Mos Def was arrested for disorderly conduct after an unauthorized performance in front of the venerable venue.

Mos Def, according to authorities, stopped off at RCMH in a flatbed truck around 10 p.m. for an impromptu show for the audience gathered there. An NYPD spokesperson said officers asked him and members of his entourage to shut it down.

But before police took action, Mos Def performed "Katrina Clap," described as a freestyle indictment of the Bush administration's slow response to last year's hurricane victims in New Orleans.

A source told MTV that officers then approached the rapper demanding the operation be stopped immediately (on the grounds that a permit had not been issued). The order wasn't communicated to Mos Def immediately, so the rapper didn't end his performance right away, the source said. Police then began making arrests, including the rapper, his entourage and his brother. It was unclear whether or not a permit was granted. Meantime, Mos Def was released early this morning, Friday, September 1.

In a statement, Carleen Donovan, Mos Def's publicist, called the NYPD's treatment of the rapper excessive.

"Mos Def was unjustly arrested tonight while performing on a flatbed track in New York City outside the Video Music Awards," said Donovan. "Mos Def was not out to break any laws. His only goal was to heighten the awareness of a serious situation that still exists in our country. He does not want people to forget that although it's one year later, the people and cities hit by the hurricane still need the help of the American people."

That's some bullshit right there. He's not trying to revive his rap career. I bet he could give a fuck about selling records right now. He's got his money. He was simply using a large stage to promote awareness and action that still hasn't occured in the gulf coast states.

Yeah I'm sorry, but MOs Def is on some real shit. That song "What Beef Is"....OMG that's one of the REALEST raps EVER, (I'm sure there are a lot though).......I disagree with Cesolito, because I don't feel he's trying to revive his rap career. Rather, he's trying to bring attention to an issue that is of GREAT IMPORTANCE. I put it in caps because the situation is so dire. What occurred last year will occur year after year. Our resources and troops are over in Iraq, even the National Guard is over there. That means less manpower to help when something goes down over here.

Katrina happened because of the history of the United States. It happened because of slavery. It happened because of Jim Crow laws. It happened because of Money and race in America. It happened because of segregation in the South. It happened because of the pervasive mind set that was and is racism. What happened in New Orleans......it was a travesty. People died unnecessarily. People suffered unnecessarily. Why? Incompetent government, at the local city, state, AND Federal level. But please believe, the Federal govt. wouldn't have let that happen if Katrina had hit a more affluent part of the country. And it is saddening. One year later, and there is still hella debris in the streets. (By the way, how the that dude Nagin get re-elected? Fucking ridiculous. End rant).
If KAtrina had hit Beverly Hills, for example? Or what about the Boston area, near Harvard or some place like that? The Federal Government's response to that would have been lightning quick.

I've been hella rambling. Just got off work and just got loaded. I just disagree. Mos Def is just trying to bring light to an issue that needs it, not just out for some sort of attention, IMO.

Mos Def really is one of those conscious brothers so I doubt hes using the disaster to ''gain...fame''.The USA literally shitted on the whole black community during Katrina,it might have happened in New Orleans but it would have been the same response had it been anywhere else....as long as the victims were poor blacks.
