Last night Bloody Disgusting broke the news that the well received Mortal Kombat Rebirth short film is being made into an online web-series. Bloody Disgusting has an excellent track record for Mortal Kombat film related news, as they were the ones who broke the news of the Rebirth script being penned by Oren Uziel a year ago. Here is what they revealed about the new web-series:

Bloody Disgusting learned that director Kevin Tancharoen - who directed the awesome online short - will return behind the camera for a 10-episode web series dedicated to the popular video game. Penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing, star Michael Jai White leads the cast as "Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs. Shooting will take place in Vancouver this coming February. Contested expected to be cast are: Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and of course Scorpion. No release date is planned, and there's no word on that R-rated remake. The only plot details we could conjure up is that a few Earthlings will fight to save the planet from Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, two Gods ruling over parallel universes, or something to that effect.

With filming starting next month, we would expect this series to kick off later this year. It's possible the episodes could start showing up sometime in April to coincide with the release of Mortal Kombat (2011). It is really starting to sounding like 2011 will indeed be the Year of Kombat with the largest marketing push behind a Mortal Kombat game since Mortal Monday back in 1993.

fuck yeah!....a little disappointed that it wont be made into a full length movie...but still it could be awesome

We Must have found this at the exact same time, because I have the info copied and was getting ready to paste on here. lol

It turns out that making fan videos of your favorite video games can get you real work. Remember Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, the fan-made movie trailer for a fake Mortal Kombat movie? Well is seems that director Kevin Tancharoen’s entrepreneurial attitude has paid off. Tancharoen has been offered to direct a 10-episode web series for Warner Bros based on the Mortal Kombat franchise.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that actor Michael Jai White (The Boondocks and The Tyler Perry Show) will be returning as Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs, but no other actors have been cast at this point. Filming begins in February, so no release date has been scheduled either.
Here is the original trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth.

i wonder how long each episode will be? if its 20 minutes each , then it might as well be a movie...and hopefully they keep it gritty and dark....im already more hyped for this then the original MK movies which were tamed down

I still love the first MK movie.

it's the second one that they lost their ground.

And this is cool. I remember being lost in the hype behind the Rebirth trailer and hoping it would have turned out being a movie.

Rebirth is the one with Baracka being a doctor right? Hopefully this will lead to a full length film.

Black Dynamite made me a fan of Michael Jai White. Made me rent Spawn and it was better than I thought it would be.

Glad the director is getting this too. That little trailer he put together was very impressive. I would have assumed it was a big budget movie.

Yeah I kinda like this news more. Movies have quotas, deadlines, and budgets to fill while this will be more of a dedicated release for Mortal Kombat. I hope they find ways to market this series so they will take it serious and put out some good material...

And Michael Jai White is god,

that is all..

Blood and bone was crazy. Not the greatest movie but it had some pretty good fight scenes and seeing Kimbo in a movie was pretty strange lol.

I hope that this turns into a "good" MK series or movie. Time will tell I guess.

The strangest part about Kimbo was he made a good actor. He really needs to stop trying to fight and get into the movie biz..

One problem is most of the actors were horrible so I hope they get better ones for the new cast. And they better not just get some shitty token asian for Liu Kang...

My dad was watching Drake and Josh one afternoon, so I sat down with him and lo and behold there was Kimbo pretending to beat the shit out of Josh in a jail cell.

I liked the twisted reality that guy made with these characters as canvases. I'm actually not that impressed with the Baraka character being more traditional.
