Mixtapes were the best when you had dj screw or rectangle mixing and blending. anybody can scream over a track and bullshit. it takes talent to scratch and blend.

most of the mixtapes coming out dont have a whole lot of mixing involved, id appreciate the work in one a whole lot more if there was scratching and real mixing involved and not just a bunch of DJ tags on the songs

i miss the compilations but they becme really sloppy recycle centers that were bullshit. Back in the old days when you got a comp the songs were originals and you could only hear them on that comp or until the rapper puts a tape out and alot of the time it was a remix or something. People started putting out scam comps and killed that game

if there were still putting out comps like west coast bad boys the game would still be kickin and it opened doors for alot of people

the mixtapes i grew up with were basically ghetto-ass compilations. basically a mix of songs a DJ put together, usually blending into the next track ON TAPE. sometimes they'd have a freestyle or someone rap over some current song but originally it was just a ghetto made/sold compilation. i guess today they just using the term on anything as an excuse to put out shit that is poor or low quality of a real album. so todays use of it basically means whatever ain't an official release but some shit to promote their music during the drought i guess. well that's how i see. i guess each rapper has their own excuse as to why they call whatever they're putting out a mixtape.

Then what is a street album? Isn't that same as a compilation?
in my opinion the street album is the album that help promotes the bigger more distributed album something thats really gonna only sale on the streets and most mom and pops..something to warm you up for the bigger heat i suppose lol

street album=2009 name for something thats not quite a mixtape, not quite an album (closer to a mixtape)
^^^ or what he said lol

and comps over mixtapes any day...

100% agreed. I remember you had to buy some komps to get that exclusive song.

the comps in the 90's were great but after that they became terrible. I remember i think 2002 was the year of the compilation in the bay and there was nothing really memorable released that year lol
