Interesting comments...
Hyphy is just a newer term for what has been going on in East Oakland. Side shows have always been a East Oakland thing from way back in the 80's. Read and learn...
Before there was Bayfair mall, there was a skating ring. The day before school offically started, everybody and they mama would drive.
Go back further 70's/80's were two different but dominant african american cultures existed in Oakland- Pimps and Panthers
The reason I focus on Oakland because culturally--Black culture especially has dominate the landscape of the Yay, from politics to cars. Used to back in the day Latino's out here had lowriders, not anymore--Scraper/Ripper Nation--that is one of my bay area quotable.
Anyways to continue, On San Pablo the Pimps would ride to check on their hoes, At Mosswood Park and others the Black Panthers would hold rallys, and family days, once trying to leave the park cars were backed up thus not being able to pull off right away--The beings of driving slow and checking people out. The beginnings of what we call Sideshow.
3 cities exist in Oakland, CA as do 2 exist in Richmond, I guess a couple in Vallejo as well as SF.
The economics of the 3 are different and over the past 20-25 years have worked themselves out to all different outcomes. To understand were we are, why there is a Hyphy movement, Why the Bay is still segregated and why our music which is good music too me, but to mainstream it is too agressive and flamboyant you must know your past.
Part I-for real folk desiring the truth
