Police 'staggered' by $87.5m cocaine haul
New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has congratulated officers over an $87.5 million cocaine seizure in Sydney, the fourth-largest in Australian history.
A 50-year-old man and two women - aged 25 and 28 - were arrested and charged with drug-related offences yesterday, after authorities searched nine properties around Sydney. The three are all Australian citizens.
Fifty-year-old Hu Wang and 25-year-old Yue Ma were remanded in custody after appearing in Central Local Court earlier today.
The 28-year-old woman is due to face Sutherland Local Court today.
The drugs were discovered in a shipping container of furniture that arrived from South-East Asia earlier this month. They were allegedly packed into one-kilogram bags labelled as green tea.
Members of the Joint Asian Crime Group began their investigation in January after receiving information about money transfers into accounts in South-East Asia.
Commissioner Scipione has described the seizure as "staggering".
"[It's] 250 kilograms of cocaine that will not be adding to Australia's drug misery," he said. "It's an outstanding success.
"Illegal drugs are a blight on our country and as law enforcement officers, we will continue to track down and certainly prosecute those who are responsible."
Police believe the haul is the second-largest seizure of cocaine to be made in NSW.
The maximum penalty for importing commercial quantities of cocaine is life in prison and/or a $825,000 fine.
More arrests are expected.
