Niners plan for Lelie to get more playing time

Receiver Ashley Lelie will get more playing time when the 49ers return from the bye week to face the Giants on Oct. 21, coach Mike Nolan said Thursday.

"The important thing is that the plan is to utilize him a little more," Nolan said.

Through the first five games, Lelie has been on the field for just 10 offensive snaps. Yet, Lelie was 49ers' receiver that the Ravens feared the most when the team met on Sunday.

Nolan spoke after the game with Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who told him that he planned to double-team Lelie when he was on the field. Lelie played just one snap. The Ravens did not double-team any of the 49ers' other receivers, thus they could devote more defenders to stopping Frank Gore.

"Sort of gets your attention, doesn't it?" Nolan asked. "There were some things after this game I knew clear-cut we had to do better. There wasn't a lot of gray area on some of things. It didn't surprise me."

The other receivers haven't received that kind of respect this season. Teams have been able to devote an extra defender to containing Gore because the 49ers lack playmakers at wide receiver. Lelie was the one players, with his size and speed, that the Ravens had to worry about. Yet, Lelie was the 49ers' No. 4 wideout.

With Lelie expected to get more playing time, it also casts doubts on whether rookie Jason Hill will see action when he returns. Hill sustained a hamstring strain in the days leading up to the game against the Steelers. If he had not been injured, the 49ers planned to suit him up for that game.

Now, Hill's situation is up in the air. Lelie will get more playing time, and Bryan Gilmore is in the mix, too.

"The complexion around him has changed a little bit," Nolan said of Hill. "If he'd been healthy, maybe I wouldn't have make the decision to bring Bryan Gilmore back. Maybe I wouldn't have brought in (LeRon McCoy). He's got a little more competition."

Hill is practicing at full speed after missing three games with the injury.

Quarterback Alex Smith did not throw today. He tested his shoulder pretty good on Wednesday, and said everything felt "really good."

"He looks good," Trent Dilfer said. "I caught for him. He had good velocity on the ball. He's as tough as anyone I know."

Dilfer said he has experienced 10 shoulder separations in his career, including six on his throwing shoulder. Dilfer said Smith's return will be based on pain tolerance.

Smith agreed.

"It's not a functional issue," Smith said. "The question is if I can withstand a hit."

Smith, who estimated he threw at 90 percent on Wednesday, said he plans to throw over the weekend. He might to throw 80 to 100 passes. He expects to practice Monday and then decide Wednesday whether he'll play against the Giants.

"I don't want it to be a game-time decision," he said. "I want to make the decision on Wednesday and get ready to play."

Tight end Vernon Davis said he probably would not be able to play if the 49ers had a game this weekend, but he said he expects to be ready to go against the Giants. He said he is running at near full speed, and expects to practice Wednesday.

The 49ers' coaches will work Friday, while the players have three days off. Nolan told his players he wanted them to continue to think about football, and what they need to do to help the 49ers be successful. He told them to rest their bodies but not their minds.

About time!

Yeah I was wondering why they haven't be using him... it may open up things for Gore and stop teams from stacking the line of scrimmage. What's wrong with Mike? Why did it take him this long to figure that out?

bwhahahahahahahahahaha

use Asslie more???? thats like saying you're going to get a cat to listen, or the satan to be nice, or the kkk to get along with minorities..IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN.

First the player in question would have to want to play...he doesn't

Second the player mentioned would have to have more talent than the defense...he doesn't

Giving Asslie more time is the worst thing they could do right now...that is unless you want someone who will run really fast 50 yards and then either miss the ball, not fight for the ball at all, or blame the qb for not getting him the ball correctly.

Yeah but the Niners need a speedy deep "threat" to stretch the field. You see the d coordinator for the Ravens was going to double him if they would have played him. That would have freed someone else up and/or opened things up for Frank Gore. I would have to see him drop a few passes as a 49er before I give up on him. They gotta at least give him a shot and play him... if they don't it defeats the whole purposes of signing him in the first place.

thascary 1 always dogs former Broncos. Look at Gerrard Warren for the Raiders. He's been playing pretty good for us.

and please tell me how Asslie did in atlanta?? dropped fucking passes all season!

he's a fucking tool!

And I don't hate all former Broncos just the ones that deserve it.

You can say stretch the field...HOW????

Cover leile one on one there is no stretching involved only taling 1 guy oit of the mix which would have been out anyways

and GW was good for us at the start too..wait until his welcome wears out.

I am not saying he's all that... but he must be some sort of threat if Rex Ryan planned on double teaming him. I say give him an opportunity as a 49er and see what happens. The Niners are ranked dead last in total offense if I am not mistaken. They gotta give Lelie a shot to see if he's any good and giving him a shot may also spark the offense. He looked pretty good in pre-season.... don't know why they're not playing him or haven't tried to.

Don’t even mention “Big Money”…that guy is and always will be a bum.

Tony…you will see…after he settles in and feels comfortable…you won’t see him do anything on gameday. I tried telling some of these Broncos fans that but they didn’t want to hear it. Now look where he is.

Even his new buddy Sapp called him “Chump Change” some years ago.

I don't pay attention to what people say about other players. Warren Sapp said he didn't think Warren would crack the top "eight"... but as of today Warren has been the best D-lineman on the Raiders so far. He's leading in sacks, he has a forced fumble, and he sacked Cutler in the end zone for a safety.

So I say we should see what Lelie can do in a 49er uniform. I am not saying he's all that but they gotta give him a shot. He's only been on the field for 10 offensive plays... WTF?

Look...I could care less if you pay attention to what other people have to say.

The proof is in his stats. Go look at his rookie season…and then look at everything after that. He could have been good…but all that money got to him and his ego. He himself has admitted to being lazy and partying too much.

Don’t listen…but you will see. That is of course if he stays with the team after the season.

Just because he was going to double team him doesn’t mean all teams will.

The Ravens were playing without Rolle…so maybe they didn’t have enough confidence in his backup.
