Don't Expect To See Kimbo Vs. Petruzelli II on New Year's Eve
The Internets are alive following a mention in the South Florida Sun Sentinel which stated that Kimbo Slice "may fight on the DREAM K-1 New Year’s Eve show in Japan, possibly a rematch with Petruzelli."
Before this story came out, we spoke to Slice's manager, "Icey" Mike Imber, and he mentioned that Slice would be open to continue fighting in the United States or venture over to the Far East, but that no official talks have taken place with any promoters since the demise of EliteXC last week.
"We still need to go through our shit with EliteXC," Imber said. "Until that is all finalized it's kind of hard to even think about that (but) we are open to anything."
Imber was referring to UFC president Dana White's "offer" to Kimbo Slice to join the cast of The Ultimate Fighter, but reiterated that he really hasn't discussed anything yet.
"We really don't know what is happening right now," he said. "It's in the hands of the lawyers."
In other words, all this "rumored fight" talk seems a tad premature.
Furthermore, we spoke to agent Ken Pavia yesterday who has been trying to get answers from anyone at ProElite as to when his fighters will be legally cleared to fight for another promotion, but has found this task to be quite frustrating.
"I have 12 fighters under contact with ProElite and no one is getting back to me," Pavia said. "So, I drove an hour and half to their offices to get some answers...The fighter's are entitled to know what is going."
Pavia was essentially stiff-armed by a secretary when he got to their Los Angeles office.
While Pavia - and anyone who had a contract with ProElite for that matter - hopes to have this situation resolved swiftly the reality is it may take several months before this whole mess is resolved.
Pavia also told Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports that, "the contracts will be considered company assets in bankruptcy court and be up for sale to the highest bidder, if such a bidder exists, with the funds used to pay any outstanding debts as well as Showtime, which held a secured loan."
Again, this may take a while.
So, while it may seem like a nice story (if you're into that sort of thing) to have Slice and Petruzelli go at it again under the bright lights of the Saitama Super Arena on December 31st, I would guess that the chances of that happening are about as good as the former street fighter ever stepping foot inside a UFC Octagon. Slim to none.
