According to comments attributed to Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson in a new interview with The Nassau Guardian, Slice could be set to embark on a professional boxing career soon rather than later.

Ferguson expressed to reporter Dahalia Smith that he could be ready to make the transition from MMA to boxing as soon as he has fulfilled the remaining two fights on his existing MMA contract, which is currently property of the San Jose-based Strikeforce promotion following a recent acquisition of select assets from ProElite.

“… I have two more MMA fights scheduled before this year is out,” Slice is quoted as saying, without specifying which organization those fights will take place with. “Every fighter and athlete knows that you should not switch camps in the middle of something. Also, I train in Florida. My MMA trainer will also be training me for stand up boxing. Finishing up my contract would allow me to be a free agent.”

It is believed that under the terms of Slice’s old contract with ProElite, that he was precluded from competing in boxing without expressed permission. As such, he would likely need to satisfy his current contractual obligations before transitioning to pro boxing.

As it stands now, Slice is currently not slated to compete for Strikeforce as negotiations between the two sides have reached a stalemate in recent weeks. While Strikeforce cannot legally force Slice to fight for the organization, Slice legally cannot compete for another organization since Strikeforce holds ownership of his promotional rights.

Despite a 3-1 record and becoming one of the most recognizable names in all of MMA, it would appear Slice’s true passion is for the “sweet science” of boxing.

“Boxing is really my first desire,” Slice revealed. “I have a lot of love for it and believe I can do pretty well. [The sport of] MMA is somewhat of a project for me. Boxing is one dimensional while there are a lot of dimensions in MMA. I don’t think it would be a hard transition from MMA to stand-up boxing because of my fighting style.”

In addition to believing that his strengths are better suited for boxing, there are some aspects of MMA that have apparently caused Slice to become disillusioned with the sport.

“… MMA training is extremely hard,” Slice is quoted as telling Smith. “When you consider martial arts training, you have to prepare for kicks to the head and legs, and opponents wanting to grapple and throwing you to the ground, pounding you with their knees and hands, whereas in boxing you just have to be prepared to weave and bob although the training can be just as intense. At this point in my career, I want to take that same drive and focus that I invested in MMA and put that into training for pro-boxing cards.”

It would also appear that Slice’s ill-fated showdown with Ken Shamrock this past October that resulted in Shamrock pulling out the day of the fight due to injury with Slice ending up getting TKO’d by last-minute replacement Seth Petruzelli caused him to sour even further.

“… In some cases, if you are too far advanced in promoting a MMA fight, anything can happen to the fighter. A fighter can get an injury, causing him to pull out of the fight; like Shamrock getting a cut above his eye and backing out at the last minute. That left me having to fight an opponent who I knew nothing about.”

If he is out of breath after 1-2 rounds in MMA, what makes him think he'll do better at boxing? You need to be incredibly conditioned to make it in boxing, be prepared to go all 12 rounds.

Besides, we've already seen Kimbo in boxing, he went by the name of Butterbean. A circus attraction that was fun to watch KO'ing bums off the street, but couldn't beat anyone with any decent skills. Actually, Kimbo would be very lucky to have the career of Butterbean, who had a very long career beating up tomato cans.

Kimbo would become Zuri Lawrence's first KO win. He should stick to what he's doing now .. beating up bums and staying away from anyone better than Seth Petruzelli.

Damn Kimbo makes it seem like the sport it too complex for him.
ahahaha.

well, I guess he didnt expect MMA to be so complex.. I mean, you gotta have a good ground game, stand up, defense, take down, reversals...

He should go to Japan and make money doing odd ball fights and be like Bob Sapp. I mean the opportunities in Japan for a fighter is like being a celebrity. Pro wrestling matches, commericals, tv and movie exposure...

And the crowd will love him.

That's weird that he would rather box... but shit, that's cool with me... he's got a point, although it makes him not look as bad ass...

If you really think about it he should have gone into boxing a long time ago in the first place (if anything at all). All of his youtube video's were basically street boxing matches. Two guys standing up and punching. Anytime someone tried to wrestle with Kimbo his posse would bum rush in and break them up.

Yep, this would be the best option in terms of making money.

He was suppose Box originally, but he switched to MMA bekuz he said "its the future".

that was street boxing and mutha fuckaz agreed to just chunk em. Except Gannon.

I was hoping he stick to MMA and work on his skills. See, Elite XC wanted to make money outta him and they FUCKED UP bekuz Kimbo is not a good MMA fighter... fuck he's pretty new IMO. He gets alot of hate bekuz he was in the spot light and that is really bookings fault. They thought that his street fighting and Bas training him would make him a HW top contender.. and well, he only fought how many fights? James Thompson, IMO, should have one that fight. He had Kimbo down and the ref let it go (probably bekuz they wanted Kimbo to win).

Kimbo's fault too though, he shouldnt think he was up there with Fedor or Randy.

I have never heard of him ever saying anything like that.

In fact, from what I've seen and heard directly from his mouth, he was very humble about his MMA experience.

It was the media who built him up to be this superhuman character, which is why his loss was such a devastating blow to his MMA career.

Morebass is right. Kimbo is a pretty humble dude. He just can't cut it at his age in MMA.

I know that he's humble. I've met Kimbo and chopped it up wid him. I heard in one interview he was calling out UFC heavyweights. Maybe the fedor comment was over the top. I just remember he was comparing himself.. but not in cocky way.

i agree that EliteXC built his rep as "superhuman". Their fault as I said in my comment.

Interview was on sherdog awhile back. As for him, I hope he turns out good. I've been a Kimbo supporter since the beginning. He gets so much flack for being pushed into the main event.. its really unfair.. and when he lost... people bashed him even more. I felt bad for dude bekuz he is a humble guy and people talk trash on him.

Same with Lesner.

I think its unfair to all the people that start from the bottom, but at the same time, its about making money... Problem is, its not pro wrestling where you can build up a character... Its up the the fighter to keep winning.

But Kimbo is someone that has potential. Chek all my past comments on him. I was hoping for him to be a rising star.

I WAS THE SAME WAY I THOUGHT HE HAD DECENT SKILLS TO WORK OFF OF. AND I THOUGHT HIS CHIN WAS WAY BETTER THAN HE HAD. O WELL, MAYBE K-1 OR SOMEBODY WILL SWOOP HIM UP.
