notice how the price went up as burning or bootleging cds went up?.....its all hand in hand..........retailers, suppliers, and labels arent getting the right return on demand so they was trying to get it back form the consumers that where buying but therefore it was a dubble ended sword and killed or is killing retailers / labels and leaving the solo benifites to the "burners / bootlegerz" in the end all lose : bootlegers run outa of stuff ta bootleg for they rum labels outa business, therefore running retailers outa business, and therefore leaving the consumer nothing but main styream music to buy

When an album isn't solid from beginning to end, do you think someone is gonna drop their hard earned cash on it? Fuck no....they'll burn the cuts that are tight.....When CD prices go up, then the demand will of course fall. I don't understand the logic of these retailers thinking that if they are having trouble selling CD's, they should increase the price. It is simple economics, and anyone that has ever taken an econ class would know that in order to increase demand, you lower the price.......It all has to do with Utility (satisfaction). The satisfaction you get from a $19 CD is nowhere near the satisfaction you get from a $1 CD-r.....If that were the case, the $19 CD would be 19 times tighter....feel? Most people would rather have the original CD though, so if they just lowered the price down to like $10, I think you'd see sales increase.....

^if cds were 10 bucks id buy em. ALso i think that the record labels are greedy and try to bust the pockets of the people who dont burn cds for their losses of burnt cds and the LACK OF TALENT (like said).

I dont buy cds for 20 bucks. Thats how much they are here. CDS used to be like 13 dollars. If they dont have my purchase at Best Buy, i get it burnt.

Ill buy a cd for 20 bucks if its: DE, LYNCH, LOKI, SICX, GROUP HOME, GANGSTARR, KOOL G RAP, MOP, NINE, JERU, ICP, TWIZTID or an artist on a small label i like.

FUCK, an artist gets such a small percent of the cd sold, you know its the record labels driving up prices id figure. Besides like peeps say, if its not that great and you only like a few songs, why pay that much for it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
mis-informed info there........most labels i deal with includeing my own label are willing to sell at $5 a unit and sumtimes will drop to $4 a unit if the quanity is str8. now a days the label or distrubtor cant have control on the price, if we give it to distributor for $4 or $8 they gonna sell it to the retailer for $10-$11 no matter whut, and the one stop gonna sell it to the store for $14-$16 no matter whut, so the store gonna sell it for $16-$20 no matter whut jus goes down the line and in the end each person is only making change per cd so whut can u do?...........most mom and pops make only $1-$3 off each main stream unit they carry but they gota caryy it cuz it pays the bills and draws in a crowd of ppl.....see the distributor, retailers, and store look at like this, we dont need ur music cuz we can get plenty of music main stream music at that, so buy it for thsi or never mind cuz we are gonna sell 300 of eminem's new cd taday regardless in teh chains, and we gonna sell another 200 J lo's new cd and another 200 Country cds, so who cares about ur selling 20 today...........its sad and fucked off but the truth...........i wouldnt waste my "hard" earned bread on a weal cd either, but from $19 a cd to $1 for 3 free songs?...........yea so its not ok for them to cheat u and burn u for your "hard" earned money, BUT its ok for u to cheat and burn them for they "hard" earned money?............hmmmmmm sounds right i guess, cuz them (the music industry) owes u huh?...for all the bad stuff u gotten over time?..........kinda like a dubble standard aint it?
I think Robb's the only one that addressed the problem. The stores are closing because people aren't BUYING music anymore..
do you really blame the consumer for this? I mean, me personally, Im NOT PAYING 18.99 for a piece of shit cd that has 5 tracks I like, that's what the internet is for. If you put out a weak CD then of course your sales will suffer...Techn9ne has provided the best example that completely disproves the theory that internet piracy is responsible for sales, he went and put 3/4 of his album up for download and he's over 50K with no radioplay, little advertising and no television....and he did it independent.
The way I see it is this...I walk into Sam Goody in 1999 when MP3's and pirating are at the pre-Napster level and I see cds going for 19.99...that's bullshit...I really don't know who to blame for it, but its a FACT that major labels and retail stores ARTIFICIALLY INCREASED the price of a cd from 11.99-14.99 to 16.99-19.99...very few people these days are gonna spend 19.99 on a cd, so basically, what you got is the industry killing itself off in the long run.
Not only that, but you got the industry saying its okay for rap music in perticular to be so one dimensional. Maybe these corporate idiots need some music listeners to pick there artists, because there's only a certain amount of time someone can listen to rappers talking about ICE before their appreciation for the music decreases...and after it decreases then there's no need to buy new cds about ICE when you already have about five or ten...maybe if corporates got a little creative in the product they were pushing there'd be a change in sales...for example, Techn9ne instead of Ja Rule, Andre Nickatina instead of P Diddy, Done Deal fam instead of Cash Money...anyone who thinks Eminem is selling mass units just because he's white is crazy, of course he has a huge crossover audience but judge him by the content of his cds which continue to be the most original out.
my 2 cents.
i dont care what anyone says, cd's are too expensive..... so why them????
i will never spend $16 for anyones cd, not to mention $19-20..... i dont care who it is, ill wait 1 month til its in the used section at rasputans..... and im an artist, a label and a ceao, plus a fan, so i understand people not buyin cd's....i aint bought a new cd since spice 1's last album..... only peoples shit i get now is new cats, cuz they sell them cheap.....
too bad we cant get the distributors and chains to lower there price as well as ours.... but i feel the price of cd's is what kills sales.... and nobody can tell me different
even if you hear a cd is off the hook bangin, you still gonna buy it w.o hearin it 1st for $15.99-19.99??? not me, ima at least see if i can hear it on the net 1st....
If someone is gonna pay 18.99 it should be quality product.
In rap.. Good music,lyrics, content, quality, art, n all that shit.
But quality is in the eyes & ears of the beholder
yea so its not ok for them to cheat u and burn u for your "hard" earned money, BUT its ok for u to cheat and burn them for they "hard" earned money?............hmmmmmm sounds right i guess, cuz them (the music industry) owes u huh?...for all the bad stuff u gotten over time?..........kinda like a dubble standard aint it?
That's real talk.
For instance... Bayside gives a label $7.41 per unit... they sell the unit to one stops, chains and other retailers for $10.59... who in turn price the cds anywhere from 14.99 to 19.99.. so in most cases the chain retailers are the ones with the high mark ups.
wait a minute there pilgrims....
I've had a few drinks and I'm enjoying my Friday night with my girl and I just logged on to see what was going on here.
Let me give my input.
First off, if you price your CD's at 4-5 bucks to me and we discuss a lower list price then I'm shooting for it.
example
I give you $4 and we shoot for a list of $11.98 then I'm selling it for $$7-$8.
So please don't give me that about the distributor selling CD's at their own exorbitant prices. Many labels are up to their own rendition of 'get rich' busines practices anyways.
How many of your colleagues do you know who will ask for up front money and do NOTHING with it?
I know a lot! Distributors aren't the bad guys here. The labels who take advantage of the number of distributors are. Hop-Scotch ring a bell?
I had too many labels come at me for money and after I gave it to them they disappeared.
Where are the street teams?
Where's the sniping?
Where's the guy going into all the stores and putting up displays?
Where's the fliers with the regional radio stations call letters and phone numbers? Why would I put this here? Because there isn't the vinyl presence. How do you expect mix DJ's (Dee Jays, DJ'S, Dee J's, D Jays...are you getting the DJ part?) to mix in your shit without vinyl? Before some of you get back at me with the played out bullshit that radio doesn't support your shit please take a seat.
You need college radio, you need the clubs, you need everything you can possibly do.
Make some people sick of your title. Because you will get through to the majority. West Coast music isn't dead. West Coast labels have become LAZY!
I DON'T SEE ANY PROMOTIONS. ALL I HEAR IS RHETORIC! BULLSHIT SOAP BOX POSTURING!
PROMOTE YOOR SHIT.
What do you do when you go to a cold climate?
What do you do when you go to a hot climate?
YOU ACLIMATE!
You adjust to your surroundings.
With the stores closing it WILL affect your sales. If you have 100 stores and you have shrink to 40 why bring in the same amount or more units? ESPECIALLY TITLES FROM LABELS THAT DON'T PROMOTE.
Please don't get it twisted. I am on your side. But to sit here and play the blame game is absurd. Take responsibility for your own inadequacies
Blow up in your own backyard. Don’t look at Lynch’s (Who I feel IS NOT DOING ENOUGH FOR HIS COAST OR PROFESSION) Sound Scans and tell yourself YOU NEED TO BE WHERE HIS NUMBERS ARE.
You are your own label. You have your own clientele.
I’m tired and need more Mickey’s.
Good luck and be safe!
shit we're willin to drop our initial unit prices if that's what it takes to up the ante... but it's gonna take much more than that. A mark-up will occur somewhere down the road.
We used to give some one stops and distributors $4 per unit if they got 100 units from us COD... and we guaranteed to buy back returns at the same price... but we have yet to get calls for the returns.... so we assume the units sold through.
