Hawks not done at running back

Just days after Seattle signs Duckett, Jones pays a visit

By CLARE FARNSWORTH
P-I REPORTER

KIRKLAND -- Tim Ruskell wasn't kidding about doing everything possible to upgrade the Seahawks' running game.

So much so that the team president is leaving no running back unturned in free agency.

Case in point: Julius Jones, the leading rusher for the Dallas Cowboys three of the past four seasons, began a two-day visit with the Seahawks on Thursday.

While it might seem odd, considering the team just signed free-agent running back T.J. Duckett, it's just the latest indication the club will not sit through another season of averaging 101.2 rushing yards per game and 3.8 yards per carry -- the Seahawks' lowest since 1999, Mike Holmgren's first season as coach.

"That is a major offseason fix," is how Holmgren put it in recapping his frustrations from the 2007 season.

"Now what does that mean? You're talking about scheme; you're talking about players. The whole deal. You've got to be able to run the ball in this league better than we ran it."

That's why Mike Solari was hired to be the new offensive line coach. That's why the Seahawks jumped at signing former Pro Bowl guard Mike Wahle as soon as the Carolina Panthers released him last month. That's why getting right tackle Sean Locklear signed to a five-year deal before he could become an unrestricted free agent was a priority.

And that's why Jones is in for a visit, two days after Duckett agreed to sign with Seattle.

Visiting is one thing, signing is another -- especially for Jones, who is considered the top back available in free agency now that former San Diego Chargers backup Michael Turner has signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Seahawks still have little wiggle room under their salary cap, and still have running backs Shaun Alexander and Maurice Morris on the roster. Jones also visited the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans this week, teams with a lot more money to spend and greater needs than the Seahawks at such a pivotal position. The Titans considered trading for Jones last year when he was a restricted free agent.

But the fact that Jones is here indicates he has yet to find what he's seeking.

A second-round draft choice in 2004, Jones rushed for 2,896 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first three seasons with the Cowboys. Last year, however, the focus shifted to Marion Barber, who racked up 975 yards and 10 touchdowns en route to being voted to the Pro Bowl. Jones, despite starting 16 games and running behind a line that included three Pro Bowl blockers, had career lows in attempts (164), yards (588), average per carry (3.6) and touchdowns (two).

Jones, 26, has had durability issues. He missed 11 games his first two seasons because of bruised ribs, a fractured scapula (2004) and a sprained ankle (2005). But he still rushed for 819 yards as a rookie and 933 in his second season.

He has started all 16 games the past two seasons, with his only 1,000-yard performance coming in 2006 (1,084).

Where would Jones fit with the Seahawks, especially if they select another running back in the April draft?

Ruskell's plan, as he has done at other positions, is to add to the pile and then let the backs sort themselves out during the spring minicamps and training camp.

Duckett (6 feet, 254 pounds) was brought in to supply some needed power in short-yardage situations. Alexander is coming off two injury-interrupted seasons of diminished production. Morris is a good counterpunch runner, but not the long-term answer as a feature back.

The additions of Jones (5-10, 208) and a college back definitely would change the dynamic at the position, not to mention possibly altering the personnel on the Seahawks' 2008 roster.

Need to upgrade that O line too
Seahawks sign guard Wahle

Former Panther expected to solidify position

By JON NAITO
P-I REPORTER

Mike Wahle's week began with news of his sudden unemployment. After three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, including a pair of Pro Bowl appearances, he was released Monday, a victim of salary cap considerations.

It did not take long for him to find a home.

Wahle signed a five-year deal Thursday with the Seahawks, a move expected to solidify the left guard position for Seattle, an annual trouble spot following the departure of Steve Hutchinson to Minnesota in free agency before the 2006 season. Value of the deal was not announced.

"I wanted to go to a quality organization," Wahle said by phone Thursday night. "I wanted to go to a team that had a championship makeup now. They've been a team that's been very successful in their division and are very close to taking the next step in getting back to the Super Bowl.

"They were on the top of a very short list of teams I was interested in."

Wahle, 30, will likely replace second-year veteran Rob Sims in the starting lineup. Sims started every game last season and showed promise at times, but also struggled to maintain consistency, often splitting time with veteran Floyd Womack during games.

The 6-foot-6, 304-pound Wahle is one of the NFL's most durable linemen, starting 128 of the 142 games he has appeared in, and has missed only three games in his career because of injury. He has started every regular-season game six of the past seven years, including last season, and made Pro Bowl appearances in 2005 and 2006.

He was selected in the second round of the 1998 supplemental draft by the Green Bay Packers (coached at the time by current Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren) and spent seven seasons with the Packers before signing with Carolina prior to the 2005 season.

Wahle arrived in Seattle on Tuesday night and spent Wednesday touring the team's facility in Kirkland, Qwest Field and the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, where the team will move its operations next season.

In addition to meeting with the front office, Wahle spoke briefly with Holmgren and met with assistant head coach Jim Mora (who will succeed Holmgren as coach following the 2008 season), offensive coordinator Gil Haskell and new offensive line coach Mike Solari. Wahle's rookie season was Holmgren's final season as Packers coach. Wahle also met with quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who was a former Packers teammate, and defensive end Patrick Kerney.

Wahle was impressed with the professionalism he encountered, and that, along with the fact his parents have a second home on Bainbridge Island, made the decision an easy one.

"They really made an impression on me," Wahle said. "At this point in my career, this is the type of organization I want to be a part of. I wasn't surprised by Carolina letting me go. It was something I had prepared over a year for, and I think I'm heading in the right direction now."

Wahle's father played at Bellevue High School and at Oregon State.

The Seahawks also announced Thursday the hiring of Bill Lazor as the team's quarterbacks coach.

Lazor, who formerly held the same position with the Washington Redskins, replaces Jim Zorn, recently named head coach of the Redskins.

Lazor spent the previous four seasons with Washington, the past two as quarterbacks coach.

His arrival still leaves Seattle in need of a running backs coach, because Stump Mitchell left Wednesday to join Zorn in Washington.

Your telling me he's NOT an upgrade from Alexander???????????

Me Tog!!
I predicted a bounce back year for Shaun this upcoming year, assuming that he is 100% healthy. He started showing signs of the old Shaun in the alst few games when his wrist almost fully healed.

Even still, Julius is younger than Shaun, and thats an upgrade in its own right there.

The Seahawks reached an agreement in principle Friday night with former Cowboys running back Julius Jones, the second running back move made by the team this week.

Jones agreed to a four-year deal worth around $3 million a year. The contract is similar to the five-year, $14 million contract reached with halfback T.J. Duckett earlier this week.

With Jones and Duckett on Seattle's roster entering the season, the question is whether or not Shaun Alexander will be around. The Seahawks decided to keep Alexander until they found replacements and now they have two potential replacements.

Jones is expected to compete for the starting job. Duckett was signed to be a short-yardage back as well as a backup fullback and power back. Jones is considered a more elusive back than Duckett.

Jones' final two choices were Seattle and Detroit, although he had interest from the Bears and Eagles for potential visits next week. He had also visited with the Tennessee Titans.
