If your values conflict with the military, don't join. If you do, join the Air force. I just got out last year after doing 6 years. I was deployed twice. The first time was in Diego Garcia where the B-52s were stationed during the bombings in Afghanistan in 2002 and the other time was in Panama City, Fl.
Even if you are planning on retiring from the military sign up for the least amount of years initially. Don't sign up for 6 years. #1 You might find out the military isn't your cup of tea. #2 If you hate your first job like I did you are guaranteed a job change after 35 months.
I initially signed up for 4 but changed my job after 3 years and was obligated to serve 23 months after my job change. That's how I served 6 years. After 6 years in 2 different jobs, I realized the military bullshit is always there no matter what job you have.
If you sign up for 6 years, you can change your job after 59 months. So if you hate your first job, you have to be in it for 5 fucking years before you can change. Don't fall for the $3-6k bonus the recruiters throw in your face for signing up for 6 years. I know at 19 or being broke that sounds like a lot of money. $6,000 or $10,000 isn't a lot in comparison to what you are giving them. They come out on top. You are giving them 2 years extra of your life without overtime pay. You might hate your life in the military too. You can always make money back but not your time. Besides the time, your bonus is taxed. You make $6,000 in half a year in your first year. You give them 2 extra years for a half years pay? Don't be fooled! I know everyone I talked to who signed up for 6 years regrets it. They didnt do the math like I did. All these 19 year olds think 6k is a heap of cash lol.
Lastly but not least don't choose a career in vehicle ops or maintenance in the Air Force. My friend got deployed 6 months in 2005 and he is doing another 6 months right now as we speak in Iraq. They trained him how to drive a convoy and shoot guns. He drives army convoys around. He seen some crazy shit. He's faced near death situations like getting shot at through the windshield while driving and saved a civilian contractor driver's life by performing first aid after running over a road bomb. He's in the air force doing an army job.
Here is a clip of him fucking around shooting some rounds back in the spring in Iraq.
