The first legit Oakland release was a single called "Motorcycle Mike" by Super Rat. This was in 1981. $hort released his first actual single in '85.

Info courtesy of Billy "Mothafuckin'" Jam.

I've heard some names inthis thread I haven't heard fromyears. Themid-80's was underground heaven. The area was so fertile. Nobody was selling a million records, but nobody was selling weak ass shit and diluting the market. By the time LA cats started droppin shit there was already a pretty good Bay Area Hustle goin.

APG crew...GOT, DAMN!!

You know what. I never really liked when the Bay blew up to the point where everybody was soakin up game. It used to be somethin that could differentiate the G's from the don't knows. Now, the lines is too blurred. Like when they released Too Short's old music again. I hated that shit. I used to get mad at 40 for givin up game so continuously. Havin everybody talkin this Yay shit. Coldn't stand it. But now I just deal with it. I look at my old crate of records at these old classics and just shake my head. Excuse my english, but is I'm a dyin breed. The kind of brother who heard and bought shorts vinyl from 75 girls.
It was a weird time...it was right after the break dancing phase (zero gravity, ultrasonic, Chucky Cheese teen night, fool!) and right before thins new kinda rap was really out there on and poppin. I mean you had a bunch of cats like Run DMC/whodini droppin they first shit. Then you had west coast fools finally stoppin that Dr Dre Cabbage Patch SHIT (I aint gon lie, I was doin that shit)... and then you had a small little enclave in the bay where it was all about rappin. Just keep on rappin....keep spittin....that's all it was about.
