Between me and my pops we have over 500 DVD's (My dad just likes buying movies). Anyways they take up a lot of space and my dad's not really keen on categorizing and when it comes to finding a certain movie it takes a bit of time.

I want to rip all the DVD's (Video_TS not compressed because I want all the extras) to my computer. I know this is going to take a lot of space, at least 3 terabytes, but in the long run it'll be save a lot of physical space in the house.

I know some people just convert their collection to divx and what not but I don't want to waste time converting I'd rather have the whole thing.

Anyone else feel me on this?

If you do rip them you should rip them as IMAGES. It will just be one big 4.5-GIG to around a 7-GIG file. I know DVD Decryptor can do it for you. It's harder for a hard drive to lose small pieces of data than to lose one BIG file.

yeah i have wanted to do this for the longest time now. hard drives are finally gettin reasonable, especially external hard drives. i want the rip all the dvds and have them on my hard drive so when i eventually get money buy a HDTV with pc input and then you can hook up your computer to the tv and watch all the movies you ripped onto whenever you want. sorta like on demand. i was just wondering if you ripped the dvds into .iso, .img, etc what kind of media player do you need. and screw divx, ill take better quality rips over smaller file sizes.

i also read in a magazine that this guy does this he has like a dvd player in a theather type room and there are actually some companies that sell a little computer thing just for storing movies digitally and then its got a easy to use interfence and you could hook it up to a projector (probably to a lcd or plasma tv too now) and he had like 2000 movies one click away. it costed like 5000 bucks. that was a while ago and i know you can do it yourself a lot cheaper.

blu-ray and hd-dvd wont really take off becuase the dvd/cd media is getting obsolete. digital distribution is the way and hard drive storage capacities are catching up both in size and cheap prices.

Yea I have a 32" inch LCD connected to my computer. DVI to HDMI and the picture is top notch.

Since the media is on an ISO/Image, when it loads it'll show up as a regular DVD and it'll launch on whatever default DVD player you have on your computer.

You could also use VLC, I have a Mac so the standard DVD player just works fine for me. And since I have my computer connected to an optical sound out it's very nice

sounds like all you need is time and money then. which most people got one or the other.

You can have all Movies on less than 1 Terrabyte on a Modded X-Box - just put in a 750Gig Hdd and format it to 32 sectors so you don`t lost data.
100 Movies = 70 GB = 1 Movie = 700 MB @ Good Divx Quality
500 Movies = 350 GB
And you got still a lot of place for games & Music and whatever ...
And it`s not that expensive
Xbox + Mod Chip + 750 Gb Hdd + Dvd Playback Kid you can also plug in Keyboard + Mouse with a Adapter & can run Linux & Windows CE on it

Not really trying to convert my collection to Divx since I want all the goodies on the DVD.

I'll probably wait till ZFS is more common on hard drives.

Have you ever ripped a movie before? I ripped the movie 300 on my mac book pro. It took about 20 mins. If you really have 500 dvd's your looking at about 166 hours to put all those dvds on a hard drive.

All these responses you got, sounds like you didn't even need any advice or help.

And, how exactly is physical media becoming obsolete in terms of how many dvd's and space you're gonna have to use?

Just wanted to see if anyone was on the same page as me, and if anyone has tried this type of setup.

Look at music, physical CD sales are dropping. Newspapers, mostly everyone relies on internet for up to date coverage.

Yes, media is changing, but not physically obsolete.

Everyone has an iPod, but ain't nobody trying to rock 3 terabytes worth of movies. C'mon man.

the new wave is called digital distribution, you can buy a new movie in your house the day it comes out. you can buy it 24 hours a day, etc. once storage capacity and bandwith are good enough this will be the wave. even bill gates said like a year ago that hd-dvd/blu-ray will be the last real physical media format. it also cuts out a lot of cost of making cds/cases and shipping them to stores and then havin the stores make money off the movies too. its still not here yet so there at still a lot of questions aobut it. like can you bring your digital material to someone elses house/computer, etc.
