The Hughes Brothers’ latest project Gentlemen of Leisure has come under fire by city officials who worry about the effect the new HBO drama will have on the world’s view of Oakland.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the controversy is putting the new show’s shooting location in jeopardy, as members of the Oakland City Council and others debate whether or not to approve a film permit for the production.

Originally announced in July, Gentlemen of Leisure follows the life of a legendary Oakland pimp, as he struggles to leave the hustle.

The series, written by Evan Reilly, delves into the overall hustlers’ subculture by examining the conflict between old-school pimps and the younger guys whose approach incorporates the violence of the drug culture.

The City of Oakland’s concern is that the show will take advantage of the negative reputation already associated with the Bay Area hub and create an environment that will lead to the further exploitation of women.

That image would stand in exact opposition of Mayor Ron Dellums’ plan to create a “model city.”

The Hughes brothers, however, argue that their aim is to do for Oakland what The Wire did for the city of Baltimore by staying as true to reality as possible.

“It’s The Wire meets The Sopranos set in Oakland in a crime element never used before,” Allen Hughes told The San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s not just about pimps and prostitutes, but also about the history of a city that never got it’s due. Like Detroit or Miami and a lot of other cities, Oakland is steeped in heavy street industry, in rackets. I’m just going to say it, Oakland is a pimpin’ town. It’s flourished there. And whenever and wherever street life is celebrated, the city gets a shout out.”

In previous interviews about the project, Allen Hughes explained that Gentlemen of Leisure would be a departure from the traditional portrayal of pimp culture and would explore the human conditions it creates.

“This isn’t something we take lightly and we’re not doing a show about a tawdry pimp,” Hughes added recently. “The city is the star of the show, and characters spring forth from that.”

Even if they are denied permission to shoot in Oakland, the Hughes Brothers plan on starting production on Gentlemen of Leisure in the fall.

The show is executive produced by Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine and Polly Anthony for Interscope’s TV unit.

Iovine has voiced his interest in tying the drama heavily to Hip-Hop music.

I think it's better that they do make the show as close to reality as possible. It would be worse for them to do a show focused on oakland and have it be nothing like oakland. they might as well keep it real and show people a side of oakland that people live with everyday.

What? Oakland being exploited? Naw that can't be....I would like to thank the Hughes Brothers' for helping to worsen the reputation of my city. My nigga everybody already know that Oakland is the City of Dope and the Town of Macks. We don't need no TV show showing that shit. I already get looked at with apprehension when I tell white people where I'm from....lol When are we gone wake up....

Can any show ever be as good as The Wire?
i doubt this show can portray oakland as deep as the wire did baltimore. i mean, they covered the police, dopeboys, drug lords, city council, and school kids side of the story. this show will probably just focus on the played out "pimp" shit.

lol maybe when it comes to music I'm a hard headed hyphy youngster, but this is real life. Exploiting the problems in the Town is stupid IMO. This ain't the way to go about change in Oakland. Now that I think about, the Hughes Brothers aint trying to bring about change in Oakland. They just trying to get paid off us.

you should tell ppl you're from San Leandro j/k
But on the real it's gonna be a bad look for the town and the bay in general if this get's made because the hughes bros like the rest of the world just wanna glamorize the crime/violence and the fact that these people don't value they're own lives as much as they do theirs, it's this infatuation that suburban america has with street cat's never afraid to die attitude that made gangsta rap so predominant in the 90's and what still drives sales of "trap music" to this day.Without someone from the bay writing/directing this it has no shot at being anything more than an hour long weekly hood movie. these guys have an outsider perspective of it,Im guessing they might have talked to a few pimps possibly at the players ball, but news flash a pimp is a full time liar,so of course they're gonna sell them niggas on the dream and all the lavish lifestyles you can get from having a stable out there getting it for you so this has no shot at being more than a distorted faulty tale of flashiness and extravagance with a love story jammed in there because it's typical hollywood faggotry

if you dont educate the people they will never know. i hate the fact how yal and by "yal" iam not limiting it to the people in this thread but those of which in the general public aswell. you would rather continue livin in blind and withhold information from ever getting out. this bay area is full of poor sorry excuses of substance when indepent guys try to release their own products and it never goes anywhere, and iam not talking about the hughes brothers.

ever since technology hit this area people created their own labels and became such and such. from lame ass dvds on sideshows to weak ass documentarys. that never seems to leave the light of the bay area. im all for real shit hardcore or not as long as it depicts the truth of past or present rather if it is good or bad.

in time my true message will be revealed.
