How do you tell a child when a pet dies?

Pour out a little liquor for the homie Stuey, my cat got hit by a car and died this morning. He was about 8 or 9 months old, but a real good cat.

I have my son on the weekend and he's 3, so he's going to be asking where the cat is....and I'm hella stumped on what to tell him.

He's only 3 and I'm sure he won't remember further down the road. It's a lot more difficult to break it down to a kid who's older than 5 years old.

When a pet dies of natural causes it's easier to explain but when it's hit by a car it's tragic.
