To be honest, ANY speedtest run on Comcast is kinda shenanigans because of the "burst" they have when you first start downloading. Your speed doesn't stay at that rate constantly.

The company I work for sells ADSL2+ service capable of up to 40mbps downstream and it's a dedicated line unlike cable where you're sharing with everyone else on the node. The only downside (as with all copper based internet products) is that the farther away from the nearest central office you are, the speeds decline.

Besides having our own fiber buildouts in the works, we also recently started support for Google's beta fiber project in Stanford which is already up and running. 1gbps symmetrical service. Now THAT'S ballin' lol. The only thing is that no computer (or speedtest) is capable of getting 1 gigabit so most people see around 450-500mbps.

And on the reminiscing tip, the AOL Hip-Hop room used to CRACK. That's how I met Gas One in the mid 90's lol. Making fake accounts with CC# generators and TOS progz are my biggest memory of that shit.
Kansas City, Kansas will be getting 1GB Google Fiber sometime next year. I can't wait to get that shit and be unstoppable on XBox Live....lol

Fuck i remember commecting at 24kbps.
word I remember the first computer I ever owned in 1997 had a 32k modem, i'd download shit at 3kbs and think I was ballin. In December 1998 my uncle got a bonus at work and bought me a new computer with a 56k modem a 6GB hard drive and a 64mhz processor and I had the greatest computer out of everyone I knew lol people was all impressed and shit.

Funny thing is that 56k modem, 6GB hard drive, 64mhz processor computer cost over $1000. Funny how cheap technology got.

wtf...i need to move to Canada

what exactly is ping?
its your connection reachability
the lower the better, 2 is the lowest it can possibly be

anywhere from 2 - 50 is pretty great
50 - 100 is medicore
100 - 300 is shit
300+ is fuckin faggot shit

someone with a 2 ping vs someone with a 300 ping, the person with the 2 ping is going to have a 298 ms advantage

in terms of first person shooter games thats an insane advantage in terms of seeing someone first and being able to shoot first and have your bullets hit first

Yeah ping time is a big factor if you game online.

As far as Google Fiber in Kansas City Ka/Mo, yeah I know all too well lol...And please know that's just the beginning. Google is gonna become the next big ISP trust that. There's alot of info I can't divulge.

Lastly, on the X-Box Live tip it is true even with a 1gbps connection you'll still only go as fast as their servers allow.

@ConstantElevation what city do you live in?

So would we say that DSL may be consistently faster on average then Cable internet... due to the fact of sharing the bandwidth? while cable might be faster during bursts or the middle of the night?

My day time speeds are shit

Nato:

It really depends on where you live in multiple aspects.

#1 - If you're out in the boondocks or far away from a central office, you may not be able to get DSL speeds that suit your needs while cable will.

#2 - If you live in an area with high bandwidth usage (urban areas like SF) then your cable speeds will not be the same at various times of the day. This is because you're basically sharing a connection with everyone else on the node.

It really all boils down to where you live. Take SF for instance: They have 9 central offices (AT&T owned) but the city is pretty well covered. In other cities (like Santa Rosa) there are only 2 central offices so less people are able to benefit from the product. Our company has it's own equipment in these offices that allows us to push up to 40mbps to customers over AT&T owned copper but the farther out you are it will be slower.

At the end of the day, DSL is still a dedicated line to your house and yer not sharing with anyone. At my current spot, I'd only be able to get up to 6mbps so we went with Comcast. The speeds are great (for now) because there aren't alot of torrenting assholes like myself lol.

If you got anymore questions just lemme know.

Yo DJ Mark ... what do you think about this 25% boost that comcast gave all their costumers just recently? I thought it was a gimmick at 1st, but after doing the steps that tell you how to get the boost I did notice the difference..
