Lemme tell you what I've done so far. I install the cd, a blue screen pops up and I push enter to install windows. Then it says where to install windows, I had to select UNpartitioned since that's all there was. Next i had to format with NTSC and after formatting was done, it copied files from the cd to the hard drive, after that it rebooted and brings me to the blue screen again. I push enter to install windows, then it asks to select part of hard drive to install so I select the partitioned part I just formatted (choices were partitioned 58GB, Unpartitioned 2 GB). Then it says "there's already :\Windows, would you like to delete the file and begin installing?' I push enter. Then it brings me to format screen again and I choose "leave file alone" then it formats again, what the hell? Then it copies files and reboots again, I have no idea what to do? It keeps bringing me into a cycle.

Anyone else? After formatting the hard drive and copying xp files to the hard drive am I suppose to take out the cd-rom when it reboots? If so and I did, the screen says "operating system not found."

From memory... delete all partitions. Create a new partition. Choose to install Windows on that partition. It should format, then copy the files to the HD. When it says it's going to restart to complete the setup, eject the cd and let it restart. It should get the Windows XP screen and finish the setup. When the cd is in the drive and you turn on the computer, does it says to press and key to boot the cd, with the dots moving for the timer? If it does, then just leave the cd in the drive and don't press any keys when it asks.

k I did everything you said. But when I take out the cd, and boots again, it says "operating system not found" Could it be the hard drive? BTW it's bootlegged windows xp. No windows xp screen and doesn't finish setup. It says operating system not found. Is there a way to fix it using the recovery console? Does not ask to push any keys to boot. I just brings me straight to the blue screen.

Go back into the BIOS and make sure HD-0 is selected for the second boot option. Or just make it the first. It might be looking for windows on the cd rom or something.

OR...

Make two partitions. Make one of them like 20 gigs, and make one 40. Install Windows on the 20 gig partition, and see if it works that way. You can then use the 40 gig for storage, so that if Windows ever fucks up, you just have to reformat the 20 and reinstall Windows. That's how I, and most people that keep a lot of saved data, like to set up Windows.

Also, can I use win98 or winME boot disks? I had the same prob installing linux. I created a boot diskette (they had an option for that in the setup) for linux, and I put in the boot diskette when restarting and it worked! But when I take it out and restart it, it says operating system not found.

You didn't have to set the CD rom for the first boot device when you started to setup XP?

When you first turn the computer on, it should have a prompt "to enter setup, hit F2" or DEL or F12 or something like that. It should take you into that BIOS, and somewhere in there it should let you choose which device you want to boot first.

nope doesn't say anything like that. Doesn't say "boot" anywhere in the setup. Just brings me to a list of paritioned/unpartitioned. And asks to me to select a partition so windows xp to set up in. After that, it formats and copies xp files to the hard drive and restarts the computer, says to remove any floppies in drive :A. I take out the cd-rom and it starts up and says operating system not found, shit's a pain in the ass.

No, this is before the XP setup. This is when the computer first turns on. If you have a gateway or dell, or someother brand, and it makes a flash screen for their company, hit ESC, and you might see the prompt for "setup...hit DEL" or something like that.

when the computer starts up dont do anything and let it continue on its own. It should have restart after loading the setup files which is the blue screen you saw. now the mistake many people make is when it restarts instead of letting it do its thing they see the HIT ENTER TO BOOT FROM CD and do that which starts you all over. If you dont do anything the WINDOWS XP black logo screen should load and should start doing the install again. If you dont see a install screen then you did something wrong on the install.
