Ya there was a fat as article on it last month.
Here is what I said on another forum:
Mixtapes are flooding the industry. Since 50 Cent emerged on the scene, everyone are using mixtapes to spread the word and get their music out to the masses. Everyone from 50 Cent, Diplomats to Snoop Dogg and underground artists put out mixtapes.

Well, it seems that the RIAA is confiscating some inventory from mom and pops shops. Yesterday, Alan Berry, store owner of Berry's Music in Indianapolis, Indiana, was a victim of this. Berry's Music stores and wharehouse were raided by RIAA agents and local police authorities. They confiscated $10,000 worth of inventory, most of that were DJs mixtapes.

When asked about the raid, Berry told BallerStatus.net, "There were no counterfeits, just DJ mixes. Like DJ Green Lantern's latest. Not a booted copy, but the real mix cd."

Berry's Music is a local mom and pops music shop. The store has been open for 13 years and Berry boasts that, "When other retailers were hiding their copies of NWA's Straight Outta of Compton, we had it proudly displayed and playing in the store non-stop".

DJs around the nation are getting into the mixtape circuit. Mixtapes are everywhere, but if stores sell it they can be arrested and have product confiscated. Berry wanted to send out a plea to mixtape DJs & artists, "You will see a lot of urban music stores closing without mixes. Street mixes are an integral part of raps continuing dominance on the charts. Please Eminem, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, let your voice be heard to the RIAA to back off busting stores selling mixes you endorse or make."

If these mixtapes are out there, how are people supposed to hear them if stores can't sell them? This is want Alan Berry asks. If any DJs or artists would like to contact Alan Berry to help him fight against the RIAA, feel free to email him at [email protected]
My response vv
Ok these fucking RIASSHOLES are fucking pissing me off now. First they go and sue a 12 year old girl which was complete bullshit. Music Downloads have been around forever but why attack all of a sudden? Music Sales have decreased? MUSIC SALES HAVE DECREASED BECAUSE ARTISTS CONTINUE TO PUT OUT FUCKING GARBAGE WITH OVER PRICED CDS. Im not poor nor am I rich but I do NOT have fucking $15 to spend a cd that is fucking garbage. If you are an artist and want my $15 you should fucking earn it. Make a cd worth the $15. Put all your effort into. Too many half assed cd's flooding the market now days. Now the mixtapes. These you can barley ever go wrong. They are guarnteed to have bangers in them along with exclusives and blends. This gives listeners a heads up to whats hot on the streets. I dont like how the article says ever sicne 50 blew up mixtapes are starting to spread through the world. Mixtapes were here a long time before 50. With them taking away mixtapes what insurance does it give us? Look at 50 this is how that muthafucka blew up. You are probably saying oh well if you dont buy them you can still download them. Wrong. The rippers that rip the mixtapes get mixtapes from stores like the one that got raided above. Shit has gone overboard. Shit I can go on for days.

Point blank, mixtapes have generated tremendous record sales. Seems like the RIAA is shooting themselves in the foot, but I guess they don't want to be seen as hypocrits by suing 12 year old girls for one type of copyright infringment and not suing djs and retailers for another type of infringment.

Just another case of a head in an ass.

Mixtapes are a HUGE PART of Hip-Hop people...We've always wondered why east coast and down south cats sell more records...cause they stay MORE VISIBLE inbetween albums with things like mixtapes...Don't hate on it just cause we're starting to catch on just now lol...I'm lovin it...as long as cats keep creativity in mind and not just copy the next man

the problem is where do you draw the line, remember, your using someones music for your benefit not theres so the riaa is doing there job, shits fucked up in rap music, you dont see country artist stealing from each other, if you got talent then it will show, you dont need a mix tape you need your own production to be as good as the music on a mix tape, all the time and effort spent on mix tapes could be used to make your own shit tight, it just takes time, look at barbra striesand, shit shes recorded over 50 albums!, get your own shit together first then toy around with a mix tape

^ yea... at first i thought the same thing, using some1 elses beat is straight up biting!

But now I reckon its a dope way to get exposure, because its easy to do a mixtape & people will be interested to see how their old favoiurite song has been re-made, so they listen to them.

In turn u get reckoghnition, and once u do come with a solo, ppl are more aware of it. I know, because I probably would have never heard of Arsen & 151 if it wasnt for their mixtapes.

After hearing them on these, I got interested to buy their albums. So it works.

I think a real big reason folks do mixtapes is to show the industry and the listener's what they could possibly do if they were given the budget to go out and get them platinum beats from platinum producers. Now if you get a mixtape and it sounds like cats is just makin silly songs to them and really put no effort, then it wasn't used very wisely and you can chalk that as a loss too.
