Shocking details surrounding a northern Cali freeway shooting are emerging, revealing the incident to have been a possible hit on Oakland’s DJ Rick Lee. Know why? According to our insider… a modern day payola racket is said to be going down at DJ Rick Lee’s radio headquarters: ‘San Francisco’s Home For Hip Hop and R&B’, 106 KMEL! Don’t believe me? Just ask DJ Rick Lee’s business partner at Goder Magazine, Cartier AKA “Network”.

So what?! I think its Bay Area rappers own doing. They could care less about making radio friendly hits. If the content is too real, it had better be over a danceable beat. That's the one thing I felt good about seein in the "hyphy movement." There was Bay music you could dance to, especially most women. Mac Dre's Feelin Myself most loved line, sang by men and women with equal passion, "I treat my bitch like an ATM card", was received well cuz it was presented in a fun package. Most fun loving ppl ain't dancin or enjoyin most of the music comin out the Bay. Only a select few Bay artists have shown that know how and ability. I was raised on mob music, but I still knew I couldn't put on NOH mafia to turn out a party (UNLESS you're at a hood party w/ HOOD bitches). E-40 knows what I'm gettin at.

Long story short, learn how to package your material for the rAdio and it just might find you, or won't cost as much

Plus I smoked too many blunts at that man's house to hate. He a shark about that $, and I can't be mad cuz he's livin his life

hyphy was the bays biggest chance to succeed and it was blown.
now other mainstream artists are feeding off the sound and calling it their own.

its going to take another 12 years for the bay to have another shot at it.
now we just need to get all these bay rappers off heroin so they can actually get some decent shit together.

1 thing I question about Bay "rappers" is how many of em are musicians by birth and true music fans. Now I'm not by any means on the business side of things but from what I've gathered is, ppl w/ music in their vains make more of a ripple than those hood dudes who rap. Whenever I hear Snoop or Dre or DJ Quik or Diddy talk about music they are fans first, musicians second, and personality 3rd. Same w/ E-40.
I don't know if there are any Bay rappers at the forefront w/ that background. Then they flounder when their one style is last years thing

Rick Lee has spun our shit at the club and our jingle on KMEL as lesser know artists. Got nothing but Luv for that dude. As far rotation payola has been around since the beginning of it. Don't know who reaps those benifits tho. Think Jay Z was breaking records with hundred dollar bills attached to it and that was a relatively cheap way to get on. Till this day cash under the table wins in business every time.

haha how you think shit like Missy Elliot and shit like that back in the day got popular. i have no problems in assuming there was some serious payola going on there, not some kind of organic rise to the top.

the issue ain't really the payola. that goes on and most definitely goes on in major markets. if it's having hella record release parties and hiring the radio dj's to be there or hiring them to host your mixtape or whatever thats all a form of let me pay you and you play my record. the issue is the bad business of taking someone's money and then not playing them. blatantly fucking them over.

For the record Big Von did A Wax's mixtape and never asked for a dollar! Matter of fact we tried to pay him for his time and he did not want it.... Not all dj's are bad business.
Same goes for DJ E-Rock one of the BAY's biggest venue dj's. He's worked on 40's albums without being paid, and does it cause he loves it, or believes in your project.

He now dj's for the San Francisco Giants baseball games, the 49ers, he has a residence at the Aria Hotel & Casino at Haze Night Club & Liquid LV in Las Vegas I believe twice a week and his doing his thing, and is now on 97.7 fm as well.
