you can find a used nikon d40 for around 350-400, sometimes even new around that price range or even barely used. Make sure when you buy a camera if its a DSLR that it has the lens too not just the body.

No problem, most of the people on this board use nikon, a few use canon.. both good cameras, theres other good brands too these are just the industry standard, theres also Olympus, Pentax, Minolta i believe was bought by sony.

Hit up craigslist, last time i saw a nikon d40 with a bag, 2 lenses, the camera, batteries, and everything else it comes with brand new, for 350
