Garcia Will Not Play Sunday Back to Homepage

A high ankle sprain will sideline Garcia Sunday.
The high ankle sprain continues has claimed another victim in the 49ers locker room. This time it is Jeff Garcia who will not play Sunday against the Rams as his ankle has not responded to treatment.
“It’s worse today than it was yesterday; it seems like that’s the nature of the darn thing – it gets worse as time goes on,” Dennis Erickson said.
Garcia injured his ankle in the second quarter of last Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He was replaced for a brief time by Tim Rattay before returning and finishing out the game. Erickson is hopeful that Garcia won’t be out long.
“Hopefully he’ll be back by Pittsburgh,” Erickson said. “You just don’t know with these things.”
So now Erickson will turn to Tim Rattay as his starting quarterback. Rattay saw plenty of pre-season action while Garcia sat out with a back injury. Erickson says that he and the team have plenty confidence in the back-up QB.
“He can throw it, has a good arm and he understands the game,” Erickson said. “We’ve got to be careful that we do the right things that allow him to get in a rhythm.”
