Hoping to rescue an offense that is averaging a league-low 11.3 points per game, San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan brought in longtime coach Ted Tollner as an assistant on Tuesday.

Tollner, who was working as a broadcaster for the University of San Diego near where he lives, flew to San Francisco Tuesday morning, met with Nolan and immediately started helping out with the game plan for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Bringing him in was a natural. He has worked with former 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who left after last season to take the head coaching job with the Chargers.

"Ted has great experience with over 30 years in the NFL and in college coaching, and is well respected in the football community," Nolan said. "He will be a tremendous asset to the 49ers organization. We will continue to make every effort to improve our team."

In 2002, Tollner was the 49ers quarterbacks coach, and after two seasons he was promoted to offensive coordinator, working for Steve Mariucci. He followed Mariucci to Detroit.

Tollner learned the West Coast offense with Mariucci, but he is known more for his knowledge of the Don Coryell system that Turner brought to the 49ers after Turner was fired by the Raiders.

At 67, Tollner wasn't sure if he still wanted to coach, but he was willing to help out Nolan for the final part of this season.

Turner's replacement, Jim Hostler, has been under a lot of criticism since taking over. The offense has scored the fewest points and has the fewest yards in the league. Quarterback Alex Smith has regressed this season after showing so much promise in 2006 working with Turner. Following Sunday's 13-9 loss to the Cardinals, Nolan said Hostler would stay as offensive coordinator for the remainder of the season.

Now, he's staying but with the help of an experienced hand.

"Jim is an easy scapegoat for people to jump on," Nolan said. "The production is not as good as it was last year. I wouldn't put all that on Jim. He's an intelligent guy busting his tail. It's an offensive staff's responsibility to get it done."

The 49ers also signed quarterback Drew Olson to the practice squad, waiving guard Sean Estrada to make room. Olson, the former UCLA star and a Bay Area native, spent last season with Baltimore before briefly catching on with Carolina this month.

TOO LATE!!!

It is very clear to anyone that has been watching the Niners this season that Ted Tollner is the reason they put up 31 offensive points (in previous games those 31 points would be 15-19 points TOPS, because only one of those 4 TDs would have happened, at best). They tell the media that he is only an "assistant" for Hostler, but that's just a nice way of relieving Hostler of some of his duties as an OC.

They claim Hostler is still calling the plays, which I doubt.. But even if it were true, the guys on the field seemed more prepared to run the plays to say the least - and that credit obviously has to go to Ted Tollner. Tollner obviously knows how to prepare an NFL gameplan and how to get his players prepared to run that gameplan.

I did not expect a win today, since the Cardinals don't look like a bad team at all this year, but I did expect a better offensive output. They called the right plays to get Gore the damn ball. Did you guys see how simple it is? Dump the fuckin thing off to him in the pass game. It'll open the run up. Hostler couldn't figure it out.

The only problem I saw today is they continue to throw the fuckin ball to Darrell Jackson, knowing damn well it is either gonna be a drop or he won't even get his hands on it at all. He needs to be benched.

Fire Hostler and give the OC job to Tollner for the time being.

wow ted tollner didnt do shit with the aztecs when he coached them and unless he is bringing an offensive line with him, he aint helping the niners either......but hey if he does help maybe the raiders can use him next season
ITS NOT OUR OFFENSIVE LINE THAT'S THE PROBLEM ITS OUR QB MEANING ALEX SMITH. THE GUY REMINDS ME OF A FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK WE HAD YEARS AGO NAMED JIM DRUNKENMILLER.

PFW clowning jackson

How disappointing has WR Darrell Jackson been as a Niner? According to one longtime team insider, he could be the worst starting wide receiver the team has had in some time, and that includes the departed Brandon Lloyd, who turned out to be pretty terrible. “Not only does he go out of his away to avoid contact,” the insider told PFW. “He even fumbles the balls he catches. He can get open, but he never seems to make a clean catch.”

The play calling got way more aggressive from what I noticed during the AZ game. Gore is being used as the #1 option. Dude had 11-12 receptions and total 200 yards! We'll find out vs Carolina. If we don't win against them then we're hopeless. But I have a strong feeling we're going to murder them!
