you know... in a way, i'm really happy that the bay is finally getting some long overdue exposure... because we do have hella talent here... and these artists do deserve recognition for their skills and originality... and the majority of the shit that's been coming out of the bay for years (in my opinion) is better than 90% of the top radio hits. so yea, i am happy for the artists...

HOWEVER, i'm having mixed feelings about it because i feel like the media is just generalizing all bay shit as "hyphy"/go dumb music, and they don't really seem to give any attention to any of the quality non-hyphy music.

i mean... i do enjoy the hyphy songs... but it bothers me that the media seems to ONLY care about hyphy shit... & it's like they're turning it into a gimmick.

& i'm tired of random ass losers from random ass places hopping on the hyphy bandwagon and shit, acting like they're down with bay area rap when they only know like 3 songs that they just heard on the radio..

& it's disgusting to me when i go on myspace & i see somebody from some random ass state that's probably never even BEEN to the bay area... with hella bay shit in their profile talking about "THIZZ IS WUD IT IZ YADIDABOOBOO WE BE GOIN HELLA DUMB OUT HERE STRAIGHT SHAKIN OUR DREADZ WID OUR STUNNA SHADEZ ON AN GETTIN HELLA HYPHY IN OUR SCRAPERZ WIT HELLA RIPPERS HIGH OFF PURPLE AN WE GONE OFF DA LIQUOR... YADIDAMEAN? ON CITAZ... SHABOOBALABOOPY... I RYDE DA YELLOW BUS AN GO 18 DUMMY FA SHO BOSS UP THIZZFACE I'M A BOSS TYCOON GHOSTRIDE THE WHIP AN GAS BREAK DIP YEA I'M SUPER SIC WID IT GO STUPID CUTTY YARRRRRRAAAA"

it just really irritates me. cuz people are turning shit into a gimmick. and what WAS once this original bay area thing, which had BEEN around... has now become the "new trend" that the whole world is following. and it feels like they're ruining shit, & taking away from the uniqueness of what once was.

i mean... i STILL like the music... & i'm not gonna hate on artists if they start getting mainstream... because like i said they do deserve recognition... but... i don't like the fact that the rest of the world is perceiving the bay as only hyphy... and i don't like the way these little teenieboppers are hopping on the bandwagon and imitating shit they saw on my block mtv, or in the tell me when to go video. when they don't really know shit about the bay, or bay area rap.

& i'm tired of mtv & bet & every damn newspaper & magazine trying to examine the hyphy movement, on some national geographic type shit... like... "omg wow look at the bay natives in their natural habitat going dumb... listen to their slang. what does it MEAN? take notes, guys". i don't know. it seems like now the media is obsessed with the bay-- but only the hyphy movement.

& how many more "what is hyphy" articles do they need to write. ugh. shit is getting ridiculous.

just do a google news search: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=hyphy+movement&btnG=Search+News

man, i don't know.

i'm sorry this shit is hella long, & i don't know if i'm even making my points clear... but this is just bugging me at the moment... & i thought i would make a thread about it.

Lets see, you dont like people hopping on the hyphy bandwagon? Lets just have bay music not get popular again and have talents go to waste. If they dont hop on the bandwagon, then Bay music will be gone for another 10 years. Hyphy will break open doors for other kinds of rap, not just hyphy. So basically, I disagree with you on almost all points

Shit spreads, that's all I have to say. I remember when words like 18 Dummy, Go Dumb, Get Stupid, Hyphy, Scraper, Yellow Bus, etc. were all Oakland terms. All that goin dummy, goin to sideshows, doors open, ghost ridin, "I got grapes" slogan was all from one city, or should I say "Town". Niggas from different cities had their own shit. Frisco had their get low shit, Richmond started that Yee shit, Vallejo got they Sohab, and it was all exclusive to that area/city. But now the hyphy movement is supposedly a "Bay Area" movement and everybody and their moma uses Oakland slang and does it like the town. But no one in the town thought twice about it, imitation is the highest form of flattery. The shit spread all over the town first, then to Berkeley, Richmond, Frisco, Vallejo, San Jose, then everybody caught on and I guess it became a movement. Well now it's becoming a national movement. Sac is catching on, Fresno, San Diego, now even L.A. Now places like Seattle, Arizona and others are catching on, and the South is taking notice. I see nothing wrong with it, and honestly if anyone should be mad, it should be town cats (I mean, that's where the culture started, not the Bay, Oakland). But that's a limited ass view so why think like that? Hyphy is opening doors for niggas like Heiro and shit so overall this is a very good thing.

okay i feel what you're saying...

but while i realize a lot of slang originated in oakland... i don't think EVERYTHING did. i mean shit, mac dre & e-40 originated hella shit, and they were and are from vallejo. i think different slang terms have came from many different parts of the bay, not just oakland. but you're right; it's not something to get mad over.

Haha, yes ma'am.. I was raised here, born in B-Town though and I be over there by Prince street all the time. btw, is that you in your profile? You're pretty and look kind of familiar.

And as far as this hyphy shit, I agree that it puts us in only one category as of now, but it's a sacrifice for what's to come. I truly believe that it's opening doors and will lead to a Yay Area revolution,, bringing out all sorts of rap, from concious to mob sound. This is just how it has to start because that's what the media wants and there's nothing that we can really do about it besides stay independent..

yea, that's what i figured. that's cool. yea it's me in my profile. thanks for the compliment. you might have seen me around. did you go to berkeley high?

i do understand what's going on with the hyphy thing... i just hope that it does in fact open doors for bay artists, & not box them in.

but yea... i know it's not like there's anything i can do about what the media does... i was just venting...
