you know... in a way, i'm really happy that the bay is finally getting some long overdue exposure... because we do have hella talent here... and these artists do deserve recognition for their skills and originality... and the majority of the shit that's been coming out of the bay for years (in my opinion) is better than 90% of the top radio hits. so yea, i am happy for the artists...

HOWEVER, i'm having mixed feelings about it because i feel like the media is just generalizing all bay shit as "hyphy"/go dumb music, and they don't really seem to give any attention to any of the quality non-hyphy music.

Not much IMO.

Hyphy is just The Bay Area's mainstream offering, and with all the attention that Crunk has gotten, its only natural for the media to check in and see what the fuss is about out here...

I agree with what you're saying about people's perception of The Bay, but at the same time, this is what's going to bring the eyes in this direction so that artists like Jacka, Quinn, Zion-I etc...who are making great Hip Hop music without taking the Hyphy route, can get some shine.

it just really irritates me. cuz people are turning shit into a gimmick. and what WAS once this original bay area thing, which had BEEN around... has now become the "new trend" that the whole world is following. and it feels like they're ruining shit, & taking away from the uniqueness of what once was.

i mean... i STILL like the music... & i'm not gonna hate on artists if they start getting mainstream... because like i said they do deserve recognition... but... i don't like the fact that the rest of the world is perceiving the bay as only hyphy... and i don't like the way these little teenieboppers are hopping on the bandwagon and imitating shit they saw on my block mtv, or in the tell me when to go video. when they don't really know shit about the bay, or bay area rap.

& i'm tired of mtv & bet & every damn newspaper & magazine trying to examine the hyphy movement, on some national geographic type shit... like... "omg wow look at the bay natives in their natural habitat going dumb... listen to their slang. what does it MEAN? take notes, guys". i don't know. it seems like now the media is obsessed with the bay-- but only the hyphy movement.

& how many more "what is hyphy" articles do they need to write. ugh. shit is getting ridiculous.

the way I see it is that this whole thing is a double-edged sword or catch 22 or whatever u wanna call it. for years..when the bay wasn't getting no recognition..there was only the loyal and true bay area rap fans that stayed listenin to bay shit and stayed keepin that shit goin. other people payed no attention as they stayed with the trend of what was "cool" at the time (mainstream shit). now..with the passing of dre and this hyphy movement jumpin off..its the same people that didn't give a shit before that "rep the bay" and try to make every aspect in they're lives "hella bay wid it". u said the word perfectly..people made this hyphy craze a GIMMICK and are now runnin wit it cuz its "the cool thing to be into now". what I meant by this being a double-edged sword was that for years we been waiting for the day the bay would get recognized..but now that it is..we got people watering the the true essence down. I'm all for the bay comin up and I don't mean to sound like a hater..but it just gets on my nerves when all of a sudden..people who claimed they from other places and would never used to claim the bay as their home are all of a sudden wearing giants/a's gear n getting a pair of stunnas sayin thay they really from here. or when they never gave a fuck bout mac dre..but after his death all of a sudden people start poppin pills, coppin dre shirts, makin dre wallpaper, and all of a sudden thizz is what it is?? cmon now..being a long time bay area rap fan it just kinda sucks to see people treat it like that.
