One of 79 prisoners whose sentences were commuted by President Obama back in November, was also murdered in a halfway house in Michigan on Monday night, January 23.

Former Saginaw Sunny Side Gang member Damarlon Thomas, 31, was among nearly two dozen people at the Bannum Place residence when a pair of masked gunmen kicked in the door baring assault rifles at around 9:40 p.m. According to Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser, one of the gunmen held the occupants at gunpoint as the other sought out and located and unloaded his gun on Thomas. He was struck numerous times, including once in the head, and was pronounced dead on the scene. According to Kaiser, it appears that the shooting was premeditated. "They were looking for this person," he said.

Thomas was serving 19 years, stemming from a 2008 drug charge conviction. His arrest was part of a crackdown on the Sunny Side Gang, dubbed Operation Sunset. Thanks to Obama's November 22 commutation, Thomas' sentence was scheduled to expire in March.
