NFL fines Broncos, McDaniels for taping a practice
The NFL has another "Spygate" on its hands.
The league has fined the Broncos $50,000 and head coach Josh McDaniels $50,000 for illegally taping a practice. The Broncos broke rules by filming the 49ers' walkthrough in London last month. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora was the first to report the results of the league's investigation
The team's video director, Steve Scarnecchia, took the video and presented it to McDaniels. The Broncos' head coach never watched the tape, but also failed to report it, therefore was fined. The Broncos fired Scarnecchia.
The Broncos' front office learned of the videotaping after returning from London. The team conducted an internal review before meeting with the league.
Scarnecchia, along with McDaniels, was previously apart of the Patriots' coaching staff. The Pats were caught videotaping Jets coaches sending signals in a game four years ago. Scarnecchia is now a repeat offender and will have a hearing to see if he will be barred from the NFL. He is the son of Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia.
The way we see it
After what happened to the Patriots, the Broncos should consider themselves lucky. In 2007, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was fined $500,000 and the team lost a draft pick. The silver lining of the incident is that McDaniels showed integrity by not watching the tape, but he should have reported it immediately. This adds insult to injury in a Broncos season to forget. Denver is 3-7 and in last place in the AFC West.
