Metro police arrested one of the most wanted men in San Diego -- by accident. A routine traffic stop netted a man San Diego police call a person of interest in a home invasion and double murder two years ago. At the time, a city councilman said it was one of the worst crimes in San Diego history.
Michael Mason has been named a person of interest in a 2005 home invasion and double murder. Three masked gunmen back in 2005 broke into this home, holding five people hostage.
Sacha Newbern and her boyfriend Meico McGhee were taken to a bathroom, tortured for 10 hours, then shot in the head. The other victims snuck to safety after hearing the murders.
For the father of Newbern, any progress towards justice is good news.
"It's a tremendous relief. After two years to the day, it's a relief to know there is starting to be some closure for this," said Carl Davis, Sacha's father.
On Sunday, Las Vegas Metro police arrested Mason here two years to the day of the murders. It took Metro until now to identify him because he used acid to burn off his fingerprints.
Police say he had been using the name Vernon Smith and may have been in the valley for two years. Officers pulled Mason over for a routine traffic stop on Flamingo between Maryland and Eastern.
When police got out of their car, Mason drove off. He did not get far -- he crashed on Flamingo near Sandhill. Metro says they caught up with him on foot where Mason assaulted the officer.
"One of the things that I prayed for -- this day comes to fruition where we can capture her killers and put this thing to bed," said Davis.
Carl Davis adopted his dead daughter's children. The first step of his prayers may have been answered by a simple traffic stop by a lucky officer in Las Vegas.
Michael Mason will face nine charges in Clark County. He's been charged with felonies from assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon to reckless driving.
Metro says after a trial on these charges, San Diego police will take him for questioning in the torture and double murders
