First thing that pops into my head when I hear people mention shit like this.

I used to work with a ton of Filipinos. Eventually I did what most don't. I learned a bit of Tagalog. Now I can keep up with them as long as its basic conversation.

My homeboy and I use certain slang when people are around because the conversation may not be appropriate for the setting...which is why I can understand...

If you are in involved in the conversation and then people just switching up the language then that maybe suspect...I was under the impression that you werent involved in the conversation but was just tripping because u couldnt understand what they were saying...
