Artist management, entertainment lawyers, talent agencies ect.... for urban artists?

Doing a little research I only came across 4 managment firms but 3 only handled everything other then urban And the last one didnt have any contact info or a valid web address. I came across 2 entertainment lawyers and they basically only wrote up contracts and didnt have any sort of clout. talent agencies were all about acting.

I know by word of mouth about 2 people who are out here doing things but who else is out here making things happen for us artists and producer/beatmakers?

When I was living in Shoreline and going to school there I remember there was this music industry weekend course being put on by entertainment lawyers. It was around this time of year and had a website and shit. Fuck I wish I could remember that now for you.

Honestly, why would someone go corporate to find a manager? I understand the BS of having an associate be a manager, but I doubt firms are going to really do as much as someone that might actually give a shit....

I looked for a lot of stuff like this when I was working on an advertising campaign for mo-x and lil' g's next album and i didn't find much...I know I don't know much, but I'd rather manage myself or have someone close to me do it. No matter which way you go, there's a chance of getting fucked over, but that's life I guess.

Several artists that I know .. or know of.. have managers out of their home state. Some Portland folks work with their manager out of Texas.. a Texas artist has his attny/manager in NYC.... most of the Bay artists stay local in Cali.. I dont know how often this happens, I'm just sayin'...

Because you cant get anywhere without a real manager. Managers have the connections you need.

^^I realize that, but just you don't have to be corporate to have the right connections. You just can't be lazy or think things are going to be handed to you.

Thats not true either. If you have a manager that has plugs to labels and people with money then your more likely to get on a major project making major money. Its all about who you know and who they know. And there is nothing "corporate" about having a manager, you some kinda hippy or something?

Perfect example.

Lets say I meet johnny producer at a show, I say whatsa happenin to him and he tells me he knows so and so and I say oh man can you hook me up so i can get these beats i got to him, do you honestly think that, (especially in the northwest) that dude is just gonna hand over his contact? It aint happening. why? because in the northwest there isnt enough to go around so everyone is tight with their connects and they dont want to see the next man get up. This semi excludes record labels because that has a whole set of different problems of its own.

Bottom line is that you need connects. and your best chance is through a manager.....and we dont have alot of those here.

i think a major thing is cats in the NW need to get out odf the northwest through travelling to major music confrences as well as be ready to set up a budget that will allow them to properly promote their product and pay for certian features that will help push their product.

This is a very good point. I have been doing a ton of research the past 3 months to see what it actually takes to break into the music industry on the level that I want too. I have to be honest and say that it is nothing like I thought it was. Everything I thought about the buisness has been completly wrong in almost all aspects. Not to mention that If I laid the foundation out in steps, my foundation would be missing every other step. As soon as I dropped the net and picked up a few books on the subject, it was amazing what I started learning.

The most important thing I learned is that the northwest, Even with all its talent is not ready to blow up.

You didn't get what I meant...You don't have to be corporate to know people in high positions. It might help, but it's not necessary. And yeah, I know people act bitch-made about contacts, but it's like that a lot of places not just the NW. It also depends on what kind of exposure you're going for...But yeah 95% of artists in the NW probably don't even know what a fucking budget is..lol...And if they do, there's very few people that actually do it. Too many people up here are not organized with their promotions and sales. This is partly why people fall out of the game, they blow their money and are responsible. We've got people running labels who do ALL the work and artists that dont' do shit except sell their cd at clubs. Fuck all that, that's some part-time shit. Any artist that's serious about their shit needs to follow Neema's hustlin'/grindin example.
