just up'n.. saw this thread when i was gettin the threads wit the covers u posted 2 save...
Freshco and Miz 'We Don't Play/Ain't U Freshco?'
As winners of the NMS showcase/competition, these two Philly guys were picked up by Tommy Boy back in 1990 and although Freshco also put out another single (with '4 At A Time' on it, I believe), this was the one that people were really after.
Rhyming about the usual egotistic subjects (ie. themselves), 'We Don't Play' was a nice track with some choice scratching courtesy of DJ Miz and a dope start/stop beat running throughout. But 'Ain't U Freshco?' was the track that people were talking about - Freshco tells of the life after he became 'famous' (ie. after winning the NMS rhyme battle), and it's a wicked track. Pushed along with a nice rumbling bassline, this track is a true classic.
Apparently problems with the 'custodial system' put a quick end to the partnership (I believe it was DJ Miz that was jailed...), but Freshco turned up again in 1994 on 'Bring The Funk Thru' which had one good track on it. Still, this twelve is well worth hunting out, if you can find it (expect to get it for around ?’15).
