Does Age Matter in Rap Music???

Just something I was wondering if people had some thoughts on....

To me there is no designated age, but there should be a time when every MC decides its time to hang it up: when they aint making good music...

For some reason though, I've noticed that as artists get older, they aren't as good...
my examples:
Too Short
E-40
B-Legit
The Click
Mac Dre
Snoop Dogg
LL Cool J
Rappin 4 Tay
Naughty by Nature

So basically, Im wondering...is there really a link...cause I think that there isnt, but at the same time I look at the good artists of the mid-90's and look at their material now compared to new artists and see a wide gap.

TECH 9 - "IF YOU KEEP IT YOUNG...."

Classic words from Tech 9 @ the age of 30.....feels 18 when he busts from the grill....and believes if you keep your music young, your age don't matter. I love when he says: "Callin me an old nigga, but I dont know a young nigga and can get wit me..." in the song...PRAY FOR MY DOWNFALL.

I see it like this. I know there are hungry young cats in this. I know there are people who are not feeling some of the veteran artists who are still doing things. But I think people aren't looking at rap in a long run perspective. If rock, country, and r&b can have singers still performing on stage at 50, 60 or damn near 70, then why can't we?
Who decided that you can only rap till you're 26 with only 2 albums? As long as you've still got something to say, keep doing it. You ain't dead after 30.

You don't think 40 put its down? I think lyrically he's always on point..it's his choice of beats and music that I'm having a hard time getting used to...if he would go back to that smobbin 707 bumble in the trunk studio ton sam bostic shit....that would be the shit!

When you see Snoop on TV acting like a clown and stuff, then he's all rapping hard...it almost seems like he's lost street credibility to me...I would kind of agree Snoop need to put the mic down...

Daz and Kurupt need to get their heads back together and come out with a new DPG cd. Dog Food is one of the tightest cds. What the fuck happen to the chemistry between those guys? They used to be hella tight. Now all the shit they put out is all bootsy.

personally i think its not about age..
Its about material.

If you run out of material or shit to say you should call it quits.
For instance SNOOP DOG.
That single he got out right now..
He aint talking about SHIT. He is just taking an old song and concept and making a half assed remake on it.

I think alot of the older cats out there are doing the same thing.. but those who still have shit to say and have creative and NEW thoughts will stay successfull. Thats my thoughts at least.

yeah, i really don't think age matters. it just matters if you are makin good music. although it'z been common for some of our good rappers to slack off as they get older in the game.

I liked Grit and Grind too, but the last 2 before that I wasn't really feeling. I also noticed that a major reason why I liked Grit and Grind wasn't cause of 40 though its because the beats were spectacular... I think as an MC 40's lyrics and his flow have receded major since the days when he was commin up with the Click and with In a Major Way and the Mailman...I don't know if he should nessecarily hang up the mic but I feel that he is done creating his best material but only time will tell.

I dont think its a matter of who is old and who is young. I think its who is HUNGRY and really want success. You notice alot of artists early shit was bangin cause they was HUNGRY and later on after they got that big pay day they seem to teter off a bit. It dont matter what age you are, but how much you want it.

With age comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes a lack of focus. And with a lack of focus comes the rearrangement of priorities. That being said, those who are older typically spend less time and put less effort into their products, and suffer because of it.

I still don't think any of that necessarily has to do with age. You can have a lack of focus regardless of your age. If anyone puts less time and effort into their product, it's going to suffer. There are plenty of new artists who don't sound like they put much into it. I see your point, that once they are successfull and aren't struggling as much, that priorities tend to change and maybe the focus on making a hit is somewhat dimmed. The same could be said for a person who blows up but is still considered young.

I don't think it's as much an issue of age as it is desire or focus.

maybe it's not about the age, but I think that young people tryin to make themselfs more independent and original; tryin to become more respectable in rap area, and become more famous, yet we got rapers with experiences, old and known world-wide: they got thier own style, their fans, peaple that gonna support them, and so on.
The point is that we can expect somethin new from young, new cats; and we know that old raperz gonna rap how they always rap. - thats just what I think bout it.:eek:

Everyone is saying that age doesnt matter and if your hungry for it thats all that matters. What if a real old guy i mean in his 50's came to the rap scence and was hungry for it and wanted to make it big, and he had the skills and everything you need to make it big, would you take him as serious as you would as some one in there 20's? i mean with there look and everything feel me...i mean if you saw him on a music video would you laugh seeing an old ass gray headed dude rapping and shit?

Anyways, i feel like there is a age limit, but we still have alot of rappers out there who are old, for example Too Short, who can still do there thing in the rap game....
