it depends mayne...

i usually write to a beat to make sure its on point...

it doesnt matter what beat it is as long as its a beat...

cause that way if you writin' to a beat then it'll be on beat..and if the verse gets used to a different beat then you just speed it up or slow it down yanno...i used to do both like i can write to no beat now only cause im so used to how beats are then i'll know where the bar stops..but i'd rather write to a beat...i think everyone should write to the beat cause sometimes off beat peeps is annoyin...lolz...but thats my opinion...

always to a beat.....gotta make sure the beat, lyrical content/subject go well with each other....

here's how I usually write songs...

listen to beat, see what's a good subject for it
write hook.......get the concept going for entire song....
write verses.....work around the concept, maybe tell a story....or tell 3 different points/views (3 verses) about the subject..

I DO BOTH.SOMETIME I JUST START WRITEN A SONG WITH OUT A BEAT. OR WHEN I MAKE A TIGHT ASS BEAT WIT A CERTIN FEEL TO IT,ILL WRITE TO THAT BEAT.

I usually do it to a song I'm listining to at the time. I havn't seriously written a song in awhile, I've been focusing most of my time on making beats latley

i wright both ways but even if i cant hear a beat while im wrightin i have one in mind then its just a matter of findin one close to what i had in mind while wrighting it and makein lil adjustments to fit that beat. but most of the time i just play the beat back to back repetly until the track is done.
