Dad's Teen "Stripper Pole" Party
Cops: Pennsylvania man threw alcohol-filled basement bash
MARCH 2--The father of a Pennsylvania high school student is facing criminal charges for a party he threw in his home where teens as young as 14 drank rum, vodka, and beer and cheerleaders danced on a stripper pole he had installed in his basement. According to the below probable cause affidavit filed by Bethlehem Township police, Steven Russo, 36, following a December basketball game, hosted a party where the teens spent most of their time in the basement drinking and listening to Russo's "sex stories about all the girls he has been with." Russo also acted as a DJ at the bash playing music and "shouting 'get on the pole!'" to female attendees. In addition to the basement party room, he also allegedly kept a room on the second floor of his home that was referred to as "the cave"--a place "where people go to have sex." Law enforcement became aware of the party last month after a student tipped off Freedom High School's cheerleading coach that pictures from the evening had appeared on Facebook. As first reported by The Express-Times in Lehigh Valley, Russo is facing nine counts of endangering the welfare of children, eight counts of furnishing alcohol to minors, and nine counts of corruption of minors. Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli is taking a personal interest in the case against Steven Russo, a Bethlehem Township dad charged with encouraging teenage girls to take a turn on a stripper pole during an underage drinking party at his home then threatening one of the girls who spoke to police.

Morganelli filed a petition this morning to revoke Russo's $10,000 bail in light of the witness intimidation charges filed Tuesday. He is requesting the bail hearing occur Friday.

"I am very upset that we have this Mr. Russo who has not learned the lesson of other people," he said.

Morganelli referenced past criminal charges brought against people who furnished alcohol to minors. In 2006, Diane C. Curran of Palmer Township drew a six-to-12-month jail sentence for providing alcohol for an underage drinking party.

Curran, then 63, bought seven cases of beer for her 18-year-old neighbor, Jason Dietterick, several days before he threw a house party. Kyle Kehler, then 18, attended the party, drank the alcohol then crashed his car, killing Easton Area High School juniors Michael Cummings, 18, of Forks Township, and Amanda Schultz, 16, of Palmer Township.

In September 2002, Judith McCloskey was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after she allowed several teens to party at her Plainfield Township home. Three teens died in a car wreck after the party. McCloskey was released from prison after serving a year in prison.

"We don't tolerate adults allowing kids to come to their house and providing them a safe haven to engage in all sorts of inappropriate behavior," Morganelli said.

He said he will be personally reviewing the case and intends to recommend "significant jail time" for Russo.

Russo, 36, of the 2400 block of 15th Street in Bethlehem Township, was arrested Feb. 27 and charged with nine counts of endangering the welfare of children, eight counts of furnishing alcohol to minors and nine counts of corruption of minors.

Russo allegedly tried to get one of the teenage girls who spoke to police about the party to change her story to protect him. The girl told police she and another teenager involved in the case have been constantly harassed by other juveniles who attended the party.

He also was ordered to stay away from his 4-year-old son, Michael Clapso, after authorities believe he tried to kill himself and the child with carbon monoxide poisoning.
