I was just readin this thread about this cat from Burlingame named Kobe. Most of yall know what I'm talkin about cuz it has about 300 posts and THOUSANDS of views. I wanted to know what th fuck was goin on so I looked.

1. Apparently the record they dropped was bought buy some people on this board and pronounced weak. I never heard the shit, but this is what I gather from reading their post.

2. They have a known rapper on theri album who people said embarrassed himself from being associated withthe album.

3. Thread was funny as hell until they started throwin up sets I've never heard of.

#1 and #2 got me thinkin. If these guys really are that weak, then how did they get people to buy the record, and then post 300 responses on the internet. Amazing. Are these guys marketing geniuses?

I actually think our company has a very solid (buyable) album coming out and I would love to have the kind of pub these guys are getting. What's their secret.

With all the talk of good marketing and promotions being important, I just wonder if there is too much bad music out there to even get good music noticed. Its like finding a needle in a haystack.

As far as the Burlingame gangstas go..... oh boy. One thing you gotta say is this, if all the people on the thread are mad cuz they bought this album..... then these cats ARE hustlas, indeed.

You got a good point there. Even If people say it sucks, then someone's bound to go and download it to hear for themselves.
Any publicity is better than none at all, be it positive or negative.

GameWarden:

I think you got it all crossed up. The reason why there are so many threads on that post is that the kid is pretending to be some hard core hustler, singing songs about the inner city when he really lives in one of the most expensive cities in the bay area. Plus, those of us who did click on his music (me) actually heard it and realized it was some bullshit.

Putting out a bullshit cd with horrible lyrics, below average production and a few guest appearences to attract a buyer arent gonna work no more. Neither is horrible cover this guy posted. Basically, I think he took a risk by sending it to SadClown to put on northern-ridaz.com, or Sadclown just put it up to let the people judge. Now the people have judged, this whole board agrees his album is bullshit and shunned him the fuck off BART and hopefully out of the business. This shit should happen when the people speak.

In most of rap, any publicity is good publicity. We see rappers with some talent drop a record and sell 40K, and then go to jail and sell platinum. But when the publicity is strickly people dissing your music and making fun of you cause you look like the oldest brother in Malcom in the Middle hurts your sales. As a result of that post, Kobe $oz got some publicity (at his expense) and didnt sell a single record.

As far as the secret to publicity, its not as difficult as you make it sound. Print out a shitload of leaflets and pass em out to stores, print out a shitload of posters and put them in places where people will see them. Send your cd to some people to get some honest reviews, get Bluntarksi or SadClown to post your cd up in real audio so people can hear it. Do some banner exchanges with other rapsites. Advertise on raptalk and the siccness. Have your artists go out and perform at a few venues and TRY to get radio play though its damn near impossible. I think another secret to publicity is the appeal the cover gives to its audience. I like your cover but I don't think its appealing to the demographic you want to for a few reasons: 1. Its a cartoon style drawing, most hand drawn album covers are HIP HOP type cds, not gangsta shit. And people will also think its hip hop when they see names starting with "DJ" like "DJ Sham." 2. It doesn't give the artists a face. No one really knows your roster and on a debut it never hurts to take a group picture or somehow get a picture of each artist in the insert. 3. I don't think the cover showcases your roster or features. It would help to have some sort of list vertically in the lower right hand corner or a sticker on the cd to make people give it another look. Persoanally, I think you'd do a lot better by just getting the backdrop of the skyscrapers in Frisco or the bridge or the whole bay and have Shemp or Photo Doctor fix that shit up real nice and give it more of a potrait style cd cover instead of a handdrawn cartoon cover.

I don't see how anyone could put out some whack shit like that and be proud of it...I mean if you were gonna put out a cd, wouldn't you want it to be hella tight? People who just put out whack shit just to make a sale are gay...

Maddogg:
Thanx for the critique of the cover.

We sat down and discussed wether or not it was better to have a picture on a cover when nobody knows the artists anyways. We decided to go without the picture, especially since one of the artists is inprison while another has passed away. But more importantly, the BIG debate was over wether or not to have it be realistic or "cartoony". Interesting you would chime in with that viewpoint.
The cover you have seen was the one we had done through an artist on siccness. I like it, but you make some good points. Discmakers is taking that graphic (and its pieces) and coming upwith a final cover/insert,etc. We'll see.

AS far as the burlingame hustlas go. It just made me shake my head. It was comical... then all of a sudden people started claimin sets and ...shit, I thought I was in Sac or LA for a minute. I disagree with you onone point though.... if dude's stuff is that weak, yet he got people to buy his CD (becasue of the city, the set, whatever the reason) then I think he gotta get a little credit for hustlin people. I got a buffalo nickel in my drawer I'll sell to somebody for 100 dollars. Feel me.
I only get frustrated when I hear people express exasperation because they can't tell what's good and what's bad. So they stick to established artists. Newcomers should fight the urge to put out their shit before it is seasoned. Just cuz you make an album doesn't mean you have to release it. Its frustrating for everybody.
Matter of fact, I think I'm finan go listen to dude album and see what all the noise is about. For all I know it could be tight as fuck. But all this got me curious. Exactly what is people spendin they money on . Do they have a link or somethin.
