Haye has shoulder surgery, told to retire

david haye By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) underwent a 5-hour surgery on his right shoulder and he’s reportedly been told to retire by doctors. It’s unclear whether Haye will listen to the advice and it’s unknown when and where the shoulder injury occurred.

Could it have come from Haye’s furious sparring sessions with American knockout artist Deontay Wilder in his preparation for his postponed fight against Tyson Fury? We saw Haye taking a lot of heavy blows from the powerful Deontay in that sparring session. Shortly after that, Haye suffered a cut over his eye that caused the fight to be postponed.

The injury wipes out the February 8th fight against Fury, and it leaves you wondering when or if that fight will be rescheduled. With the amount of cash that Haye can make from that fight, it’s incredibly difficult to imagine Haye not coming back to continue his career and face Fury at some point in 2014.

Haye was said to have had surgery to repair his right subscapularis and bicep tendon, which he ruptured.

Haye said to Hayemaker Promotions “It’s a crushing blow for me. I had big plans for my next year and the ultimate goal was to win back the world heavyweight title, something my amazing fans deserve. What I didn’t anticipate was that this year would be the unluckiest of my career and that a number of my injuries would disrupt my plans so much. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be. The boxing gods keep hinting that maybe enough is enough and that it’s time to finally hang up my gloves.”

Well, if Andre Ward fought for years with a shoulder injury, then I don’t see why Haye can’t fight longer with a shoulder that’s been surgically repaired. I mean, it’s not as if his right hand was his strongest punch. His left hook has always been his trademark power punch and that should be more than enough for Haye to take on Fury and get a knockout. Of course, Haye would have major problems in challenging one of the Klitshkos for a world title, but then again he probably has no change against either of them anyway even with a perfectly good right shoulder.

It’s interesting that Fury was really complimentary of Deontay Wilder in an interview with IFLTV yesterday. I wondered why Fury would all of a sudden start lathering up Deontay with the compliments and now with the news about Haye having shoulder surgery, it makes me think that Fury knew about the surgery yesterday. Fury looked unhappy, but he wouldn’t tell the interviewer what was bothering him. But it could be that he saw his February 8th fight having gone down the drain with Haye’s injury. That would make a lot of sense.

Deontay already said that he’s more than interested in facing Fury. The big question is would Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy let the 6’9″ Fury face the 6’7″ Deontay on February 8th? There would no longer be any height advantage to speak of for Fury because Deontay is almost the same height and he has longer arms than Fury, so the reach advantage would be in Deontay’s favor, not Fury’s. I can see Fury not taking on the dangerous Deontay due to his one-punch power. With Deontay, you can’t make any mistakes with him because he can knockout you out with one shot.

Tyson Fury Targets Deontay Wilder Clash For Feb. 8

Tyson Fury has targeted American knockout specialist Deontay Wilder as his next opponent following the cancellation of his February showdown with David Haye. Haye is currently recovering from shoulder surgery and contemplating his future in the ring after being advised by doctors to retire. It is the second time in the space of two months that the former heavyweight champion has pulled out of a fight with Fury after a cut sustained in training scuppered their original September showdown.

A furious Fury took to Twitter to vent his rage at Haye before turning his attention to fellow undefeated heavyweight 'The Bronze Bomber'. Wilder has racked up a 30 straight victories by knockout with none of his opponents managing to last longer than four rounds.

"You talk the talk, @BronzeBomber, now it's time to walk the walk!" Fury tweeted. "Wilder v Fury at the Phones 4U Arena February 8th - Let's get it on!!

"You and me is the biggest and most exciting fight in world boxing! You've had banter with me and my promoter H @HENNESSY Sports so get someone to call Mick and let's give the fans a real fight!!"

Ward-Rodriguez on HBO peaks at 1.2 mil viewers, less than GGG

Steve Kim ‏ S @Steve maxboxing 3m
Im told by various sources that Ward-Rodriguez on HBO peaked at 1.2 million. Which is less than Garcia-Lopez, Bradley-Provo and GGG-Stevens

Steve Kim ‏ S @Steve maxboxing 2m
And Ward-Rodriguez had a whopping license fee of $3.15 million. And yes, the rest of the #boxing industry is aware that figure

Maybe just maybe if you promote him like you promote your HBO hypejobs like Doniare and GGG his number would be better. Maybe if you let Ward fight low rated bum to get easy knock outs people will be hyped. But no after coming back from a 14 month layoff from a bad shoulder Ward still has to fight top rated guys and he has to ko them to get any hype. Lol. Meanwhile the hypejobs can feast on bums and get all the headlines and promo dollars. HBO the brawling network. Lampley's bullshit fight game show has a Gatti list for mindless brawlers, but no boxing skills list? Been saying it for years HBO is the brawler network they love hyping the no defense brawlers.

Lol HBO hyped up.Mayweather his whole career. Roy Jones, James Toney, Hopkins.

Ward's numbers were low because he hasn't fought in over a year and not many people knew of Rodriguez. Pretty simple.
I'd say Wards numbers have to do with a couple of other factors.

Watch his interview after the Rodriguez fight and pay attention to what he says about exciting fights, fans, etc.

Now look at the list you provided. Floyd, Jones, Toney, BHOP. Guess what these guys have in common? They're entertainers and have personality. Ward? Not so much.

That goes without saying. The goodboy Son of God stuff isn't a big seller unless you're a killer in the ring. Skills like his will always be under appreciated

Speaking of Ward and Hopkins. Carl Froch just said he'd only rematch Andre Ward in the UK but no one wants to see it because Ward is boring but that Froch wants to fight Bernard Hopkins next, says they can do a catchweight of 172. Says Hopkins is more of an entertainer and would be a good fight. Kinda funny since Ward fights similar to an old Hopkins but brings up HERESYS point about personality. Anyways, I like that fight for Hopkins. Good money fight to retire on.

For one in the 90's HBO loved skilled boxers and brawlers. Roy Jones Jr and Mayweather was KO'ing elite fighters and moving up in weight. HBO had to hype them dudes. Gatti got that beating from Mayweather so bad because of all the hype HBO was give him while hating on Mayweather. I remember when the fight was made and Mayweather said he would embarrass Gatti in front of his fans. Lampley and Merchant was acting like he was lying, until fight night when Floyd almost killed Gatti.

Ward will have to move to heavy weight to get the hype he's looking for.

At the end of the day its about what the fans respond to. They hyped the hell out of Bradley vs Alexander but it did low numbers. Chavez jr fights a bum and there is no hype or promotion and it does monster numbers. Obviously Bradley and Alexander are far more skilled than Chavez but they don't draw like him. It sucks

This could be a bad move, taking on Salido in only his second pro fight...that's crazy. Could easily backfire as Salido is one tough mofo

WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (40-12-2, 28KOs) has reached a verbal agreement to defend his title against two-time Olympic gold medal winner Vasyl Lomachenko (1-0, 1KO) on March 1, as the HBO televised co-feature to the rematch between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Bryan Vera

amateur backgrounds make the difference a lot of times. A lot of "hype jobs" have great backgrounds before going pro especially in light weight divisions. If let's say Canelo had a good background he might be even better than what he was the night he fought Floyd but he's Mexican and they just start brawling at 15 and it took him 40 fights to get known. Rigo has what, 12 fights and beat Nonito in the best performance we've seen in years.
