how does a guy with one fight get a title shot? WTF! in other boxing news....

Because of his amateur background. He was 300-1 (or technically 296-1). His first fight he fought the #7 ranked fighter. Also before pro he fought in a semi-pro league no headgear, etc against high quality worl opponents.

Do you see this as an ongoing trend for the future? Or is this cat an exception?

Arum: No Reason Mayweather-Pacquiao Can't Happen

arum keeps bringing up mayweathers name lol floyd has moved on too bad top rank hasn't...

by Ronnie Nathanielsz

A possible mega-buck fight against pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr is an added motivation for “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao to score an impressive win over former lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios when they engage each other in the “Clash in Cotai” in Macau on Saturday night.

Pacquiao told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard during his training camp that his career is far from over despite back-to-back defeats last year and that he is eager to prove he is ready to return as one of today's elite elite fighters.

Another incentive for Pacquiao is the specially crafted WBO International belt ordered by President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel for the welterweight clash which WBO vice president for Asia Leon Panoncillo, who will be the fight supervisor, described as “a historic belt for a historic fight” being the first real big title fight to take place in China with Pacquiao representing Asia and Rios the West.

Arum meantime has reiterated what he said last November 3 when he was guest on Australia’s 1116 SEN Radio on the program “Evenings with Mark Fine” which on Mondays also features well-known Australian boxing promoter Peter Maniatis

Arum, talking to BoxingScene/Manila Standard, said he believed that if Pacquiao shows that he’s back with a big win over Rios then a fight against pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr can happen.

Arum said “The only major impediment is that Mayweather now fights for Showtime and Manny for HBO” but cited a precedent “when they had the same situation years ago where Lennox Lewis was an HBO fighter and Mile Tyson fought for Showtime.”

He noted that the two networks “came together and shared responsibilities of promoting the pay per view and it worked out really well.”

Arum feels that “if Manny demonstrates that he’s back and there’s a public outcry, we should be able to get it done.”

The astute promoter made it clear that “the public doesn’t want to know about backroom strategies and negotiations. They just want to see the two guys get into the ring, fighting each other.”

Arum said a possible date may be in the second half of 2014.

He maintained that a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight “would be great for boxing and its hard to justify if it doesn’t happen” pointing out that “the best tennis players play each other, the best soccer teams play each other and in American football the two best teams from each conference face each other in the SuperBowl.”

Arum said “there is no reason” not to make a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight happen and if it doesn’t happen “it looks bad for boxing” and that for his part he wants to make the fight and a first step should be to tone down the rhetoric between both sides.

Even if he beats Rios he needs to avenge that knock out from marquez who put him to sleep and also needs to fight Bradley again and beat him in big fashion. Just him beating Rios wont be enough to demand Mayweather lol. Got Em!!

Marquez says he won't fight Pacquiao again. Says he's going to retire if he doesn't get a Bradley rematch.

But if Khan gets the Floyd fight I think the "right to call out Mayweather" theory goes out the window (since Khan would need to rematch Garcia, Peterson, Prescott and Probably Julio Diaz for good measure since Khan almost died im that fight).

Magomed Abdusalamov out of coma
Dan Rafael [ARCHIVE]

ESPN.com | November 22, 2013
Injured heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov was brought out of a medically induced coma on Friday and was breathing on his own, promoter Nathan Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing told ESPN.com.

The 32-year-old Abdusalamov, a married father of three young daughters, had been in a medically induced coma at Roosevelt Hospital in New York since suffering a brain injury and having subsequent surgery to remove a blood clot on Nov. 2, after he lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Mike Perez in a vicious battle at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in a fight nationally televised on HBO.

Abdusalamov, who suffered a stroke shortly after he was put into a coma, had been on life a support machine breathing for him, but he was taken off it on Thursday night when he began breathing on his own, Lewkowicz said.

"He has tubes in his neck still, but he is breathing on his own," Lewkowicz said. "They took him off life support because he started breathing on his own."

And on Friday morning, Lewkowicz said, doctors roused him from his coma, which they had put him in in order to give the swelling on his brain time to subside.

"He's out of the coma, his right eye is open and his right foot is moving, but he is still basically in a vegetative state. I guess that's the best way to put it. It's not like he's up walking around, but he's out of the coma and off the machines, which is a good sign," Lewkowicz said. "It seems like he's progressing slowly, day by day. The fact that he can breath on his own now and not connected to a machine is huge. The fact that the doctors took him out of the coma is huge."

It is unclear whether Abdusalamov can communicate with doctors or if he can see or move his left side.

"He has a long way to go," Lewkowicz said. "How is he going to function? We still don't know."

Initially, doctors had told Adusalamov's family and boxing team that he was going to die before seeing signs that he would survive.

Abdusalamov suffered superficial injuries during the fight, including a broken nose, broken hand, cuts and bruises, but when he began to have a headache and vomited, his team took him to the hospital shortly after the fight. After arriving at the hospital, he had a CT scan, which revealed the blood clot and he was rushed into surgery.

Can you believe that Team Mago had TO TAKE A CAB to the hospital themselves?! He failed a post fight medical exam, a numbers card test which helps determine if there may be brain damage. He missed some numbers and the doctor said he's fine? They tell him he might have a broken nose, broken cheek, broken jaw and it might be a good idea to go to the hospital eventually? How actual doctors can do this is beyond me. Read:

Mayweather Sr: Brandon Rios is too damn slow!

Pacquiao Rios Pacquiao vs. Rios Floyd Mayweather Sr manny pacquiao brandon rios By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Sr. thinks they’ve found an opponent that Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KO’s) can finally beat at this point in his career in Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s), a fighter that belongs with the same Top Rank stable as Pacquiao. Mayweather Sr. sees Rios as just too slow for Pacquiao, and because of that he sees Pacquiao winning the fight. But Mayweather Sr. still sees this as being a difficult fight for Pacquiao due to Rios’ toughness and Pacquiao’s last of technical skills.

Mayweather Sr. said to Hustleboss “He’s [Rios] tough and strong, he hits hard, but he’s too damn slow. If he’s too slow, it looks to me like to go Pacquiao’s way.”

Rios is very slow and probably just a shade faster than former Pacquiao victim Antonio Margarito. But Pacquiao is also older now than he was when he beat Margarito three years ago, and he’d had three years of wear and tear on his body since then. Things could be very different on Saturday night when Rios starts putting leather to Pacquiao’s head compared to the mostly body punching Margarito in what he did against Pacquiao years ago.

Asked if he is impressed with Pacquiao as a fighter, Mayweather Sr. said “Never ever. It starts with the coach [Freddie Roach]…I’m going to tell you right now. Even though that guy is slow, he’s probably going to give a good tough fight.”

This probably will be a really tough fight for Pacquiao win or lose. Rios isn’t someone like Ricky Hatton, who will fall over each time Pacquiao lands a hard left hand. Rios has a great chin and he’ll probably be able to walk through Pacquiao’s best left hand shots to get in to land his own power shots. I know Roach has Pacquiao training to get in and get out using angles, but he’s still going to get hit an awful lot in this fight if he’s unable to knock Rios out. Just being 35-years-old and having to last 12 rounds with a 27-year-old, Pacquiao is going to take a lot of punishment. It’s going to be a tough fight for him unless he can knock Rios out, and that’s not likely to happen with Pacquiao following Roach’s game plan to keep from taking head shots.

This fight could potentially be a lot harder than what many boxing fans expect it to be if Pacquiao decides he wants to get even with Rios for him teasing Roach years ago and for his strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza giving Roach a kick to the chest this week when Roach tried to walk up on him during an argument. If Pacquiao foolishly tries to fight Roach’s battles by going after Rios from the get go, then we could see Pacquiao knocked cold again like he was last December by Juan Manuel Marquez. The look on Roach’s and Bob Arum’s face will be priceless at that moment, because Rios is obviously being brought in as more of a tune-up opponent than someone with a real chance at beating Pacquiao, like the bigger, stronger and better defensive fighter Ruslan Provodnikov.

Jermain Taylor Returns On Broner - Maidana Under Card

By Jake Donovan
An already loaded December 14 show in San Antonio now has one more fight worth talking about, though not necessarily in the same celebratory fashion as the rest of the card.

Former middleweight champ Jermain Taylor will return on the undercard of this show, which is headlined by a scheduled 12-round welterweight showdown between Adrien Broner and Marcos Maidana. Appearing on a loaded undercard, Taylor will face Juan Carlos Candelo in a bout that marks the first ring appearance of 2013 for both fighters.

“This is a terrific card. Added to the show, we have Jermain Taylor returning. He will be facing JC Candelo on the undercard,” confirmed Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer during a media conference call Monday afternoon.

Taylor (31-4-1, 19KO) stepped away from the ring following his dramatic knockout loss to Arthur Abraham in the first leg of the Super Six World Boxing Classic in October ’09. The night marked the third time in a span of five fights in which he was violently stopped, prompting his handlers and family to convince him to step away from the sport.

More than two years later, the former champ decided to give it another go. Three straight wins followed, though none of which convinced fans that he could ever return to the level of relevance he enjoyed from 2005-2009. Included among the lot was a major scare in his April ’12 bout with Caleb Truax, in which he was dropped hard in the 9th round but eventually went on to win a unanimous decision.
Taylor, who turned 35 this past August, has not fought since a 2nd round stoppage over Raul Muñoz last October.

Candelo (32-12-4, 21KO) enters this fight having not stepped into the ring since suffering a 6th round stoppage versus Fernando Guerrero last November. The former 154 lb. contender has lost two straight, with the pending Taylor fight to take place less than a month shy of his 40th birthday.

No announcement was yet made on whether the bout will appear on the Showtime Extreme broadcast preceding the Showtime-televised quadrupleheader.

Ouma Wants A Rematch With Ggg

By Ryan Burton

Former champion Kassim "The Dream" Ouma (27-8) has been in the gym training under the watchful eye of Yoel Judah in Las Vegas, NV. Ouma, who held the IBF light middleweight title, has been inactive since being stopped by Gennady Golovkin in 2011. He plans on returning to the ring in December.

"I miss the ring. I've been missing it for a long time," Ouma stated while explaining his reasoning for returning.
Golovkin's toughest fight in recent memory was his fight against Ouma who cut him during their bout that took place in Panama. Since then he has skyrocketed to stardom in the United States.

Ouma praised the fighter known as GGG while also stating his case for a rematch.
"Triple G is doing really good. I give him all of the credit in the world. I was ahead on the cards when they stopped the fight. I want a rematch," Ouma told Boxingscene.com.
When I asked what he would do differently if granted a rematch, he simply said, "I'll knock him out."

Ouma said that he doesn't know who his next opponent will be but that he won't take him lightly.
"There is no such thing as a tune up. Whoever steps in the ring is coming to fight but I hope to be a champion again in 2014," said Ouma.

The Uganda native finished our conversation by admitting that he was mostly partying in his two and a half years away from the ring but wanted everyone to know that he is serious about his comeback.
"To my fans I've just been slipping. I've been drinking a lot and smoking a lot of pot but I'm clean now and working hard in the gym. I'm humble and ready to give it a go again. I pray to Allah to give me another chance. I pray five times a day and I am ready for this opportunity," said Ouma while flashing his six-pack abs

Interesting thing about Ouma... there is going to be a new boxing reality show, i believe on Fox Sports. It's going to have Floyd Mayweather Sr. Robert Guerreros dad. Zab Judah's dad. And another trainer. Each trainer will have their own camp of fighters, i believe focused around 147 to 160 and each camp will compete/fight eachother.. Ouma is reported to be one of the fighters. Anyways, the show should be off the hook with these personalities!!! Obviously Floyd Sr and Ruben will go at it lol

Arum: Pacquiao’s next opponent will be decided within two weeks
November 25th, 2013 | Post Comment - 56 Comments
0Share 0 16Share 7Tweet

manny pacquiao By Chris Williams: Bob Arum of Top Rank says he’ll be deciding on who Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent will be for his next fight on April 12th within two weeks. Arum isn’t naming any of the guys that are in the running for the fight, but it’s the usual suspects – Floyd Mayweather Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Tim Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov. Mayweather Jr. is at the top of the food chain, but he’s also the least likely of the bunch to take the fight due to the fight not being appealing enough for him.

Pacquiao has lost 2 out of his last three fights, he doesn’t have a major title, and he hasn’t fought a top welterweight since last year when he was beaten by Tim Bradly.

“We’ll all sit down, all of us, and we’ll figure it out,” Arum said via RingTV. “Who the opponent will be will be decided in the next couple of weeks.”

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach openly wants Pacquiao to face 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez because he wants Pacquiao to get revenge for his 6th round knockout loss to him from last year. It doesn’t sit right with Roach that Marquez has been acting very pleased with what he did to Pacquiao and that he’s been seemingly bragging about it in interview and after interview. Roach wants to to quiet Marquez by having Pacquiao beat him.

Roach said this about Marquez “I don’t like the way he gloats about how he finally beat Manny Pacquiao and that he got robbed all those other times…He turned us down for a rematch but we gave him three rematches.”

It must really burn Roach how Marquez was able to beat Pacquiao last December, and how many boxing fans feel that Marquez beat Pacquiao all four times but only got credit for it once. That reflects on Roach as a trainer because if he had done a better job training Pacquiao, then he would have proved that he was better than Marquez in those four fights. But the way it’s been, Marquez has looked like the better and smarter fighter in all four fights in the eyes of many fans. It’s got to be tough for Roach because Marquez has the KO win over Manny and he’s basically walked off into the sunset with the victory rather than taking another chance with the Las Vegas judging, which is probably where Marquez would have to agree to face Pacquiao for the fight to happen.

Arum can get Marquez to agree to the Pacquiao fight, but it’ll probably take a 50-50 deal this time instead of a 75/25 deal like in the past. And there’s no way that Arum will give Marquez that kind of deal to fight Pacquiao, so the fight will never happen. Roach and Pacquiao will have to live with the defeat the same way that Marquez lived with the three controversial fights before the last one against Pacquiao.

What we’re probably looking at is Pacquiao vs. Bradley in April, and I think that fight won’t bring in good pay-per-view numbers due to Bradley’s lack of a fan base.

Froch-Groves II needs to happen

Froch Groves Froch vs. Groves george groves carl froch By Rav: Having watched the Carl Froch vs. George Groves fight last night, I saw two completely different scenarios which we didn’t think would happen; Froch was pushed back by Groves and at times looked amateurish and crude and didn’t know what to do, took way too many shots and looked punch drunk at times from heavy shots from Groves.

Due to this condition, chin and punch resistance being so good, Froch was able to fight on. Groves showed excellent technical skills with movement, stunning one punch power and the ability to exploit his opponents weaknesses with his strengths.

Froch throughout the fight couldn’t adapt to what Groves was bringing and was stunned with 1st round knockdown. But his experience told, and he always thought whilst he stuck with Groves he would get his chance later on, which he did. But Groves showed Froch’s vulnerabilities and made him look old in the fight. I was shocked at times at how Froch was moving, looking so punch drunk and throwing crude reckless shots and missing badly.

Froch showed tremendous heart courage and determination. He showed he wasn’t going to lose. Although lacking the skills of Groves, this got him through, but I believe the referee Howard John Foster panicked and reacted too quickly in the 9th round when Groves was hurt. Foster should of given Groves the chance to stand and show he could fight on, and if he would of got stopped so be it. But a rematch has to happen, and we will see if Froch can stop Groves convincingly with no doubt or whether Groves can outbox Carl Froch for 12 rounds.

With the way Froch looked last night, could he be stopped for the first time in their rematch? This makes the rematch even more intriguing. So Carl and George should agree and get it signed and I for one will be buying a ticket.
