Klitschko-Povetkin: Hryunov
Wins, $23 Million Mega Bid!

Printable version

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com has been advised that Russian promoter
Vladimir Hryunov set down a monster bid of $23,200,000
million dollars to overwhelm the competition at the WBA's
mandatory heavyweight purse bid, securing the rights to the
championship fight between Wladimir Klitschko (59-3, 50KOs) and Alexander Povetkin (25-0, 17KOs). K2
Promotions put in a bid of $7.1 million dollars and Sauerland
Event bid 6.01 million.

Klitschko-Povetkin has to take place by the end of August.
Both fighters have fights lined up in May. Wladimir faces
Francesco Pianetta next Saturday in Germany, while Povetkin
is going to make his own voluntary defense against Polish
opponent Andrzej Wawrzyk on May 17 in Russia.

Over the last few years, there were two prior purse bids and
both of them were won by Klitschko's company, K2. Hryunov is
the longtime manager and adviser of Povetkin. Klitschko will
receive 75% of the money as the "super champion" and
Povetkin gets 25%. Hryunov listed Russia, Germany and Las
Vegas as potential locations for the fight.

Hryunov is looking at a date of August 31, while Sauerland
wanted to stage the fight on August 25th or September 15th,
and K2 was looking at September 7 and September 14.

Bradley is pretty smart. If he can beat Marquez, he'll still likely get the Pacquiao rematch.

Dan Rafael D @danr afaelespn 15s
Arum told me Bradley-Marquez terms are now agreed to
on both sides. Contracts out to both for 9/14 OR in
October if Floyd goes 9/14. #boxing

2012 bantamweight gold medalist Luke Campbell has signed with Matchroom Boxing, and will make his pro debut in July.

Luke Campbell, who won bantamweight gold in London last August, has decided to turn professional, signing with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, with whom he will make his pro debut in Hull in July.

Campbell, 25, is viewed by Hearn as a potential future superstar, comparing his popularity in Hull to that of Ricky Hatton in Manchester:

"He's impressed me with his determination and popularity in Hull, the likes of which I've never seen in any city since the likes of Ricky Hatton.

"We are going to grow Luke Campbell all over the country but the journey will begin on July 6 or 13 in Hull with a huge outdoor event."

New Matchroom stablemate Carl Froch also believes that Campbell can become a big star:

"Luke has all the ingredients to become a superstar in boxing," said Froch. "The talent is there to see from his amateur achievements but what you don't see is the work rate and the desire he shows in training.

"It was clear when he was working with my trainer Rob McCracken for the Olympics that he is eager to learn and improve and he absorbs everything he's told and puts it into action.

"Away from the ring he's a great lad, very humble and respectful but he's confident and a funny guy too, so he's got the personality to put bums on seats and get new fans watching the sport which is what we all want. I'm sure we'll be chatting lots in the build-up to his debut and I can't wait to be there in Hull on a massive summer fight night."

One thing that could potentially stand in Campbell's way for true superstardom, of course, is his size. Though the sport no longer revolves around heavyweights, it's still tough to become a true major star in the very small weight classes, because there remains a dumb disconnect between casual fans and "the little guys," almost as if they're not some of the most talented and exciting fighters in the world, putting on good fights and such.

But, really, Campbell seems the sort who really could become a big star if he delivers, at least domestically, but it's unlikely he becomes a Hatton type, because frankly, I don't know that I'm likely to see a fighter who is a Hatton type in terms of connecting with an audience ever again.

Still, it's good to have a promising young fighter taking the plunge into the pro ranks, and I'm looking forward to seeing how Campbell fares long-term. He's got the skills, and he seems to have the drive.

Essential Reasons Why Pacquiao Should Switch To Golden Boy or TNT
April 24th, 2013 | Post Comment

By Miguel Alejandro Lopez: Manny Pacquiao (55-5-1), arguably the best pound for pound boxing superstar prior to two recent heartbreaking defeats, has enough reasons to call it quits with his current promotional stable – Top Rank Promotions.

The first plausible reason for leaving Top Rank is lack of new competition. Bob Arum, the head honcho of Top Rank, is known for keeping his fighters in-house. This means that for many years, fans will see the same guys fighting each other. And with the lack of viable opponents, reruns of each fight will be inevitable. Right now, Pacquiao is only being presented with the options of facing Marquez or Bradley again in 2014, and either Rios or Alvarado in 2013.

One of the best ways to revive Pacquiao’s career is to get himself in front of more challenges and fresh competition, and there are plenty of guys to fight in the welterweight and super welterweight division. The problem is, these fighters are being managed by other promotional companies aside from Top Rank.

There are plenty of good opponents currently managed by Golden Boy Promotions, like Robert Guerrero, Devon Alexander, Austin Trout, Canelo Alvarez, Sergio Martinez and many others. There are also a lot of promising boxers in TNT Promotions (currently being run by Curtis Jackson a.k.a. 50 Cent). Pacquiao can really get back in the game well if he can make a tough fight with any of these guys, instead of being shortchanged with only a few possible opponents in Top Rank.

The second, and possibly the most important reason why Pacquiao should leave Top Rank, is to get closer to the megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Contrary to what many boxing fans believe, Mayweather Jr. wants to fight Manny Pacquiao. The only hurdle that both fighters face is the bitter rivalry between their promotional stables (Top Rank and Golden Boy). While Mayweather is his own boss.

If Pacquiao leaves Top Rank, Mayweather will no longer have to deal with Bob Arum and real negotiations can take place between the two camps.

And as a congressman and an 11-time world champion, Pacquiao should really think it over because right now, he is not getting what he deserves. His contract with Top Rank is expiring in 2014.

Trout fought the last five rounds with an injured ankle in Canelo fight
April 23rd, 2013 | Post Comment

Canelo Trout Canelo vs. Trout saul alvarez boxing austin trout By Dan Ambrose: Little does anyone know that former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout had to struggle in the last five rounds with a badly injured right ankle that he injured in the 7th round in his 12 round decision loss to WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last Saturday night.

Shukree Shabazz from Team Trout told esnewsreporting.com “Nobody knew at the time. He [Trout] just gritted his teeth and went out there. If you look at the film you can see that he injured his ankle.”

After the fight, Trout’s ankle swelled up to the size of an apple where the injury had occurred, and he had to ice it.

The injury kept Trout from driving off of his right foot, which is where he generates his power. It also was the reason why he went down in the 7th because his ankle twisted while he was sliding on the wet canvas. The canvas was too spongy and his team noted that before the fight. I’m not sure why it wasn’t a firm canvas like you see in normal fights, but my guess is it was possibly done to slow Trout down enough for the slower Canelo to catch up to him. If Trout was able to fight as good as he did with an injured ankle just imagine how well he’d do against Canelo with a healthy ankle.

As it turns out, it was Trout who was pressuring Canelo from the 5th round on after Trout learned that he was behind on the score cards that the three judges had come up with. The scores seemed totally out of touch with the actual fight that was taking place and they gave Canelo a huge advantage with the judges seeing him doing the better work despite the fact that he wasn’t throwing hardly any punches.

Shabazz wants to see a rematch between Canelo and Trout, but he doubts it’ll ever happen. He thinks Trout would be a lot better in the rematch, which is probably a good reason why there won’t be one. Shabazz didn’t agree with the scores for the fight and felt the fight was much, much closer.

Like a lot of boxing fans that saw the fight, I Trout beating Canelo based on his superior aggression and the control of the fight. Trout worked three minutes of every round while Canelo looked to be working only 1 minutes and coasting the other two. Trout knew it himself that he’d have to be extra special to get out of the Alamodome with the decision in this fight because this was Canelo’s crowd and he was the home fighter.

Golden Boy and Top Rank to have competing shows on September 14th
April 23rd, 2013 | Post Comment

Bradley Marquez Bradley vs. Marquez juan manuel marquez floyd mayweather jr boxing By Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions have requested September 14th with the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a pay per view show in Las Vegas, Nevada in a fight that will be headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. a still to be determined opponent. At the same time, Top Rank will possibly have WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley defending his title against Juan Manuel Marquez in a PPV bout as well.

What this means for boxing fans is that they will have to decide on which PPV broadcast they want to purchase on that fight unless they want to purchase both of them and flip channels or Tivo them. Unless there’s an injury of some sorts that will knock one of these two fights from that date, we could see the numbers for either fight less than what they could have been if they didn’t have tough competition.

Mayweather will be okay because he’ll get 1 million buys no matter who competes against him on the same date, but it still will likely hurt his numbers if his fight has to compete for viewers against the Marquez-Bradley fight.

The only way Mayweather does really well is if he gets someone popular like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Manny Pacquiao as his opponent, and it’s hard to imagine that Mayweather will agree to face either of those guys for this date. It doesn’t make sense for Mayweather to fight Pacquiao on September 14th because that’s a Mexican holiday and Pacquiao is a Filipino.

It’s too bad the two promotional companies are fighting over dates because they need to come to an agreement somehow to have their fight cards staggered so that boxing fans aren’t put in the position to make a decision on which card they want to see. It’s better if the fans are able to see both cards.

Canelo meets with Golden Boy Promotions today to decide on next opponent
April 23rd, 2013 | Post Comment

saul alvarez miguel cotto floyd mayweather jr boxing By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) stopped off at the Golden Boy Promotions headquarters today to meet with the head honchos Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer to try and decide on who Canelo will be facing next on September 14th this year.

Golden Boy will make a strong attempt to get 32-year-old Miguel Cotto to take the fight with Canelo, but it’s going to take a lot of money to get him to agree. Cotto has lost his last two fights and he may not be excited about being in the position of being used as an old lion for Canelo to tear up and build his name on.

If I’m Cotto’s promoter, I wouldn’t take the fight unless Golden Boy could promise $10 million and there was a rehydration clause mixed in to keep Canelo from going over 160 lbs. Cotto is a former light welterweight and he’s bulked up to junior middleweight, but he’s not a natural 154 pounder and neither is Canelo.

I see Canelo as a natural super middleweight, but who melts down water weight to fight smaller guys at 154. When you get a fighter that balloons up to 172 lbs after making the 154 pound limit like Canelo does, that tells you that he’s fighting in the wrong division. He should be fighting the likes of super middleweight Andre Ward, Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler instead of guys at 154.

Canelo says he wants Floyd Mayweather Jr. next and Golden Boy would like nothing better than to make that fight because it would bring lots and lots of money to the promotional company. That fight is probably a pipe dream on their part, especially with the way that Canelo pulled out of Mayweather’s May 4th fight card after failing to get Mayweather to sign on the dotted line to face him in September.

That move may have permanently ruined Canelo’s chances of ever getting the Money man to fight him. That’s not the only reason that Mayweather won’t fight Canelo. There’s also the fact of the matter that Canelo rehydrates to over 170 lbs when he fights, while Mayweather sticks right at 150. That’s 20+ weight advantage for Canelo.

I mean I hear this and all......but come on....injuries are part of the sport.

I would think most fighters are injured throughout their fights but you have to keep fighting. If you lose you can't make it an excuse, unless it is extreme like Ortiz's broken jaw or bad eye cut and you can't see shit...

They said Canelo rehydrated to 172. Trout himself was 170. I know Golovkin rehydrates to about 164-166. Make it happen lol!

I wonder if that's why Canelo has stamina problems. Gaining almost 20 pounds in 24 hours cant be good. Although Chavez does the same thing and he seems to have unlimited stamina so who knows.
