So Froch vs Chavez is officially dead. Chavez will not sign a one fight contract with Top Rank so that's that.

Meanwhile, Froch did a poll for who the fans want to see...and the winner...GGG

Eddie Hearn on Golovkin-Froch: That is a Horrible, Dangerous Fight

"If you want to be critical of Golovkin you can break down his opponents and show they’re not absolute elite level. That’s not Golovkin’s fault because you have to pay an absolute fortune to get anyone to fight him."

"There is not 10 million in the pot to tempt the likes of Cotto or Chavez to fight him, which is the sum they’d want for that kind of fight. It’s definitely a career-threatening fight."

"Yes, Froch is financially comfortable, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get in the ring for less than he deserves, and that is a horrible, dangerous fight."

lol That's really the problem with GGG. He's not enough of a draw. Not worth the risk for a lot of guys. Beating him only makes you impressive to hardcore fans right now. This is the world we live in.

Chavez is dumb. $10m paydays he's turned down with GGG and now Froch, just because TR wants a ONE fight extension. He's going to miss out on these big fights, fight some mediocre name for a whole lot less money, then what? Golden Boy doesn't have any fighters at 168 so it wouldn't make sense signing there. Not sure what he's thinking.

I think Rubio's best shot is to back him up if at all possible. Rubio is big for the weight and if he can fight behind his jab and long right hand, he could do well. It's just hard to see that happening. If you look at the dudes that really whooped on Rubio, they were bigger than him. But, I still expect Rubio to get hammered.

Lately the guys that beat him are bigger but save for the Ouma fight he was dominated at 154 by career 154lbers. It was a while back so that doesn't really matter. Rubio does have some pop but he's also a pressure fighter, that's gonna play right into Golovkin's hands unless he can hurt him with something early.

If Rubio's still on his feet after 4 rounds I'd be surprised.

Maidana to wear Everlast Powerlock gloves in Mayweather rematch

Mayweather Maidana 2 Mayweather vs. Maidana 2 marcos rene maidana floyd mayweather jr By Raj Parmar: Earlier today, it was confirmed in a media conference call to promote the rematch between Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO’s) and Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) that Maidana will in fact wear the same gloves he used in the first fight, which is the Everlast Powerlock model.

A day before the first fight, the event was threatened to be cancelled when Floyd’s team objected to the gloves Maidana had selected for the bout. After some tense hours, it was decided that Maidana would have to switch his original gloves and wear the Powerlock model.

The gloves Maidana originally wanted to use was the Everlast MX model, which is a glove that is friendly to power punchers as the glove is made up of a combination of foam and horse hair. The Powerlock model is made up of all foam and is designed to protect a fighter’s hands. Maidana has little concern for hand injury thus would favor a glove with no special precautions to protect a boxer’s hand.

“Yes, Maidana will be wearing the Powerlock gloves,” stated Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe on the conference call. Marcos signed the contract to rematch Mayweather without a stipulation included for which gloves he can use, however he was hoping he would be able to use the MX gloves as they are his gloves of choice. Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia has indicated they have been training with the Powerlock gloves in camp and are happy to know in advance which gloves they will be using.

“We agreed to the fight, we can’t go back and say anything about the gloves,” Garcia stated on the call, “We agreed to those gloves. There are no excuses.”

Maidana for his part seems focused intensely on getting back in the ring with Floyd, regardless of the gloves. He appeared extremely fired up on the call and is eager to get his hands on Floyd and overwhelm the top pound for pound fighter in the sport with endless punches and activity.

“I already know the mistakes Mayweather makes and I’ll be ready to take advantage this time. I hope Mayweather will fight like a man and stand in front of me again. He says he wants to please the fans, so we’ll see,” Maidana explained, “The times when he was able to get away is because I let him. This time, I won’t get tired and I’ll force him to fight. Stop crying like a little bitch and fight.”

Marcos went on to state that he feels Floyd was fighting off the ropes not for the fans’ sake as Floyd has indicated, but because he put extreme pressure on Floyd and forced him to fight that way.

“When I was able to pressure him, I did very well. When he moved is when I had problems. I think I forced him to fight and that’s the reason he fought that way. I don’t think he did it for the fans,” Maidana said, “It’s very difficult to knock out Floyd because he runs, but I’ll do my best to make it happen. This fight, I’m not going to respect him. I’m going to go after him and make him fight. There are things he does in there too. He should stop complaining. Come the 8th or 9th round, Mayweather is going to be so tired from punches, he won’t be able to defend anymore.”

Roach: We [Pacquiao] can’t waste time waiting for Mayweather
August 26th, 2014 | Post Comment - 58 Comments

manny pacquiao freddie roach floyd mayweather jr By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach says it’s a waste of time for his fighter WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) to be waiting around to try and get a fight against the biggest arguably the biggest money maker in the sport of boxing in WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs).

Roach says they’ve done all they could to try and make a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight take place, but it never did.

“We can’t waste our time waiting for him. We’ve done everything we could to make that fight happen,” Roach said via Skysports.com.

It’s a fight that obviously could have taken place 3 times already. Mayweather attempted to fight Pacquiao in 2010, but they couldn’t agree on the random blood testing for the fight. Pacquiao ended up fighting Joshua Clottey instead. Mayweather later offered Pacquiao $40 million to take the fight, but he reportedly wanted a 50-50 deal.

Mayweather was interested in fighting Pacquiao before Mayweather’s jail stint in 2012. But Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum was talking about needing a stadium built, and he also said Pacquiao had a slow healing cut.

Instead of facing Mayweather in 2012, Pacquiao fought Juan Manuel Marquez and was knocked out by him.

“The possibility to fight with him, you know, the question is not for us,” Pacquiao said. “It’s for them because any time we are willing to fight, any time. I think that question belongs to them, their camp.”

Mayweather said recently that he would consider fighting Pacquiao once he’s no longer with Bob Arum. The chances of that happening now are slim and none with Pacquiao re-upping with Arum and Top Rank for another 2 years until the end of 2016.

It’s interesting that Pacquiao re-signed with Top Rank rather than try and get a fight against Mayweather once his contract with Top Rank expired. That would have been the golden opportunity for Pacquiao to get the fight.

Pacquiao and Roach have been pretty quiet about Mayweather lately. Just now they’re talking about him. Some boxing fans may see this as a case of them name-dropping Mayweather’s name to try and drive interest in their fight against Chris Algieri on November 22nd. What better way to create interest in a fight that is perceived as a mismatch like the Pacquiao-Algieri fight then by mentioning Mayweather’s name as a future opponent?

keith thurman By Don Esch: In a one on one interview with undefeated interim WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman the question was asked “Keith a lot of fans say you are not “there” yet to get a major fight with the big names like Floyd Mayweather and you (Thurman) haven’t fought anyone to merit a major fight how do you feel about that“?

Keith Thurman: “For those who believe that I haven’t done anything to truly deserve it, I can understand where you (fans) are coming from but it’s not truly my fault their (promoters) not putting me in the ring with top 10 fighters I deserve better fights than this”.

Keith Thurman: “How Many times did I ask to fight Robert Guerrero who was in the top 10? Earlier this year we asked to fight Shawn Porter and his dad said “not necessary we can do that later for bigger money”. Marcos Maidana was supposed to be my HBO Debut but he (Maidana) pulled out three weeks ahead of time.

Keith Thurman went on to state his case by saying “There have been a lot of missed opportunities’ for me to prove and to truly showcase my skills and talent to the world of boxing as a true welterweight”.

In a separate interview from an unknown British journalist the question was asked “What is special about you Keith is you constantly say your “0” record doesn’t mean anything to you so you’re ready to lose it to get the best fights is that true”?

Keith Thurman :” Well I want to test myself and these “other guys” want to make money including “Money Mayweather”,but I’m already making money, my passion and desire is to fight real top 10 competition and I was displeased with the Diaz fight so please put me in there with better competition.

Keith Thurman:” I train really Hard and I want to fight hard and I want to fight against another guy who is going to fight hard and bring the BEST out of Keith “One Time” Thurman so that I can show you guys (fans) who I truly am as a fighter and I’M NOT AFRAID TO LOSE!

Chavez Jr won’t exercise his mandatory status for fight against Anthony Dirrell
August 26th, 2014 | Post Comment - 34 Comments

julio cesar chavez jr anthony dirrell By Scott Gilfoid:
Former WBC 160lb champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) has decided not to face WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell (27-0-1, 22 KOs). Chavez Jr, ranked #1 WBC, would have been the next guy in line to fight Dirrell, but Chavez Jr has instead opted to pass on fighting the unbeaten talent for some reason.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the WBC was notified that Chavez Jr won’t be exercising his mandatory challenger status for a shot against Dirrell. As such, Dirrell can now take an optional defense against whomever he would like to face.

The mandatory position will be worked out next month when George Groves faces Christopher Rebrasse in a WBC super middleweight eliminator bout on September 20th.

I had a feeling this was going to happen because Chavez Jr hasn’t taken a meaningful fight since he faced Sergio Martinez in 2012, and Dirrell might be too dangerous for Chavez Jr at this point, given how poor he looked in his last three fights against Brian Vera [twice] and Martinez.

Chavez Jr has been trying to put together a fight against IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, but that fight is now up in the air due to the negotiations crawling. Chavez Jr had a chance to fight Gennady Golovkin before that, but that fight too failed to happen. It’s been 5 months since Chavez Jr last fought, and my guess he’s not going to fight again in 2014.

Dirrell now can pick anyone he’d like to face next. It would be nice to see him face Froch in a revenge of the brother type fight, where Dirrell would be attempting to avenge his brother Andre Dirrell’s loss to Froch. But unfortunately, Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn probably have no interest in making a fight against the blistering fast and powerful Dirrell. The fight would nbe a dangerous one, and I guess that might be reason enough for why the fight won’t happen.

Here are the top contenders the WBC had ranked for 168:

1. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
2. Gilberto Ramirez
3. Christopher Rebrasse
4. George Groves
5. Vacant
6. Derek Edwards
7. Alexander Brand
8. Andre Dirrell
9. Badou Jack
10. Callum Smith
11. J’Leon Love
12. Marco Antonio Periban
13. Hadillah Mohoumadi
14. Peter Manfredo, Jr.
15. Nikola Sjekloca

I believe the best options for Dirrell’s voluntary defense would be against the likes of J’Leon Love, Callum Smith or Gilberto Ramirez. The rest of the bunch aren’t well known enough to make them worth fighting in my view.
