Hopkins 170, Wright 170!

Friday, July 20 2007

By Albert Jiménez Howell at the scale

Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright both weighed in at 170 for Saturday night's light heavyweight showdown at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. After the weigh-in, Hopkins put his hand in Wright's face and shoved him backward. Winky responded with a push and the fighters were quickly separated....more to come.

Combination of fucking with Wright and hyping up the fight (which Hopkins is good at doing).

Yes, stomping on the Puerto Rican flag was a GREAT moment in boxing history. What that did was make every single Puerto Rican HATE Hopkins so badly that they all ordered the PPV to see Felix kick his ass but unfortunately for them they had to watch Hopkins pick apart and completely dominate the undefeated Trinidad and finally KO him. hahaha, one of the best B-hop fights ever, imo.

Here is the video of the flag incident:

I'm still looking for a video link to the weigh-in....

Good post 2-0. Cliff Rold is my favorite writer on Boxingscene. Dude always has the best articles, and is hella on point.

Contrary to what many people think, I don't think it will be a boring, chess match, type of fight. I think that both men are at the point in their careers where they feel like they have much to prove, and both will let it all hang out tomorrow night.

Hopefully. LOL...either way, these are two of the best fighters of our generation, and two of the best of all time. Any boxing fan could appreciate a fight of two guys at this level. Like mentioned, even if its not another Gatti-Ward.

Hopkins shoves Wright, entourages scuffle at weigh-in

By Greg Beacham, AP Sports Writer
LAS VEGAS — Bernard Hopkins shoved Winky Wright in the face at the weigh-in for their 170-pound fight Friday, sparking a heated scuffle between their entourages.

After both fighters weighed in at exactly 170 pounds at the Mandalay Bay casino, they stood face-to-face for the usual post-weight photographs. But Hopkins, the 42-year-old veteran who renounced retirement to face Wright, became animated and waved his finger in Wright's face.

Wright then put his finger in Hopkins' face, and Hopkins shoved Wright's head backward with a shot to the forehead. Wright replied with a right-handed swing, and both fighters' entourages quickly jumped in to separate the fighters and exchange their own shoves and blows.

Hopkins quickly exited the stage to his fans' cheers, while Wright taunted Hopkins from the other side of the stage, to the delight of his own fans. The scuffle eventually dissipated without too many serious blows being thrown.

Hopkins taunted Wright even before both fighters stepped on the scale, holding his forearms up to his face and skipping backward in a mockery of Wright's defensive stance. Both Hopkins and Wright have slammed each other as boring fighters, and both promise to knock out the other.

The 35-year-old Wright (51-3-1, 25 KOs) is making his first appearance as a light heavyweight to fight for the Ring magazine title awarded to Hopkins (47-4-1, 32 KOs) after his upset victory over Antonio Tarver last year.

Both fighters agreed to a catch-weight of 170 pounds - 5 below the normal light-heavyweight level - for the fight, with Wright adding 10 pounds to his favored 160-pound weight.

hopkins, winky and dlh will be on espn2 boxing tonite.

And in Vegas, legendary middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler joins ESPN2 FNF studio host Brian Kenny to preview Saturday’s Bernard Hopkins vs. Winky Wright light-heavyweight showdown. Hagler will also talk about the career of Bernard Hopkins - who has more middleweight title defenses than any fighter - and his move up to light heavyweight. Oscar De La Hoya will join Kenny and Hagler on the set, while interviews with both Hopkins and Wright will also be featured.

From someone who stomped on the P.R. flag...no it's not.

BTW...One of the greatest moments ^^^ in sports.

Where's the video, 20Sixx?!
You forgot the part where he presented Trinidad with his last meal, a bag of rice and a bag of beans

As for B-Hop pimp slapping Winky (sarcasm here),
I guess they need as much hype as they can generate....

He did that? That's cold right there... I didn't know about that. No wonder Trinidad doesn't like Hopkins. That wasn't right on Bernard's part. He had to apologize... I'd be pissed if I heard about a fighter that wasn't black talking about this fried chicken is going to be your last meal to a black fighter. Mayweather's antics didn't bother me because De La Hoya brought that upon himself. But Bernard wasn't right for that if he did it.

^^haha, b-hop was tight for that shit, imo.

"Just like any other exceution, you're entitled to your last meal," said Hopkins who presented Trinidad with a last meal. "For this meal, I asked all of my Spanish friends back in Philly what they like to eat, they told me rice and beans." At this point Hopkins gave Trinidad a bag of rice and Beans to Father, trainer and manager of Felix Trinidad, Papa Trinidad took time to respond to Hopkins. "In Puerto Rico, we do eat a lot of rice and beans, that's why we have a lot energy in the ring."

Trinidad told the press "I want to tell you there will be another victory for Puerto Rico."

Hey I'm Latino and I thought that shit was funny as hell....
If someone did that to a white/black/asian fighter, it still be funny to me.

But that's because I understand (well at least I give him the benefit of the doubt) that B-Hop is not racist and he was just trying to be funny.
