Sacha Baron Cohen, the British comedian filmmaker and Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan star, was beaten up by a passer-by after he tried to buy the man’s clothing. British news paper, The Sun, reports that the star asked the man “I like your clothings. Are nice! Please may I buying? I want have sex with it.”
The man did not think it was funny and punched Cohen, age 35, in the face. The Borat star yelled for help but the man slugged him “again and again”. One of Cohen’s friends came to the rescue. Hugh Laurie, 47, had been on his way to a New York bar with Cohen helped push the man away as Cohen struggled to his feet.
Cohen had planned to have a late dinner when Laurie suggested a trip to a local bar. Evidently the incident took place right after Laurie and Cohen appeared on the NBC show “Saturday Night Live”.
Studio chiefs said that Cohen should avoid pretending to be Borat, a Kazakhstan TV reporter. A pal of Cohen said: “Sacha couldn’t resist playing the fool as Borat, but picked on the wrong person.”
The report says that Cohen did not receive any lasting scars. Since the film was launched he has only appeared in character while promoting the movie on American television shows.
