Let's not forget that it can be said Babe Ruth and all the other players of that time were essentially cheating - due to the exclusion of black ball players... Josh Gibson, a black ball player who was never allowed to play in the majors was said to have hit almost 800 home runs during his time.. his lifetime BA is higher than .350... he died at the age of 35, just 3 months before Jackie Robinson played his first major league game...
And don't forget about Satchel Paige, who was not allowed into the majors until he was in his 40's.... at 42, he had a 1.33 ERA..
I wonder how the Babe's record would've been looking like if cats like Paige were in the majors at the time....
It might've only been a window of 30 years or so when Baseball was actually playing fair...
I would say it began at least 5 years after Jackie Robinson played his first major league game (just cuz a few brothas are on deck don't make it official), and ended when the 'roids started crackin'... (early 80's - i dunno.. *looks at years on McGwire's rookie card when he was skinny*)
