The map is from an index I created last spring that compared levels of income, poverty, segregation, suburbanization, education & employment between whites and all minority groups in the USA. Obviously it's highly polarized everywhere when it comes to the status of blacks/latinos compared to whites. But just how wide the gap is varies tremendously. Here's the map for Black-White polarization. If you guys are interested, I can post the map for Latino-White polarization as well.

As you can see, black people have it a HELL of a lot better out West and struggle the most in the Midwest.

Red= > 3x National Average (The Most Polarized)
Orange = 2-3x National Average
Peach = 1.15-2x National Average
Grey = 0.85-1.15x National Average
Light Blue = 0.67-0.85x National Average
Blue = 0.33-0.67x National Average
Dark Blue = 0-0.33x National Average (The Least Polarized)

The Bay Area is Grey..
Yep the average brother there has it a little worse off than they do in LA.

At a finer scale (the city scale), SF is actually one of the worst spots in the country, along with Manhattan. The black-white income ratio in Frisco is around 0.30 (meaning blacks there make 30% of what whites do). The national average is around 0.67.

What that means is that there's a lot of money in Frisco and the blacks aren't getting anywhere close to their fair share. Not that they are anywhere, but in Frisco it's worse.

But at the metro level, the Bay is better off then places like Milwaukee and Chicago.

Damn, slow poke, it's about time you post in here... Now I see that there is a method to your madness... I've some questions... Where did your data come from? The Census? State records? Local data? Just curious...

This is definitely a system of discrimination because a discernable pattern can be seen. Blacks uniformly generate the same amount of income, so in places of great white prosperity ratios become higher with the black element staying virtually the same in proportion. That's definitely a problem.

division causes tension. segregation causes MOST of the problems we have today...regardless if it's white vs black, white vs white, what the fuck ever...every one. maybe you live in a different world...

it's all HUMAN VS HUMAN...

All data came from the US Census Summary File 1 and Summary File 3. If you guys are curious about a particular component of this (i.e. you want to know about income or you want to know about segregation specifically), let me know and I'll post it.

The most fucked up city to be black in: Milwaukee

That is the exact thought process behind this type of research. You've hit it perfectly.

Blacks do not generate exactly the same amount of income everywhere BUT in places of greater prosperity, you are right, that "extra prosperity" is really going disproportionately to white people. Minneapolis MN is the perfect example.

Yeah there is a strong quantitative argument here that Seattle is among the LEAST black-white polarized cities in the USA. Suburbanization has a lot to do with this, I feel. You've got places like Kent & Federal Way where there are substantial black populations who aren't wealthy but their kids go to schools where they've got a prayer at college, whereas the way it used to be was they'd all be packed in the CD and go to Garfield and not go to college.

1) its a view, segeration does cause alot of problems.

2) what i would like to see is maps from every decade in the past, and watch what cities/region really changed the most.
1) Economic segregation does, racial segregation doesn't. But when they are one in the same, the two become blurred and you're right, it's a huge problem. Black people aren't like "white people are really cool, I want to have a white neighbor so I can hang out w/ him." If every race had the same amount of cash then nobody would give a shit about racial segregation.

2) If I had the data I'd love to do it, you're right that'd be awesome to see how this stuff has changed in the past 100 years.

Welcome, 00Sweety. Your fairy ass mission, should you choose to accept it, is to seek your way throughout the Siccness messgae boards in search of ways to discredit or defame the Bay Area. This message will dissolve into flower-scented powderpuff in 30 seconds.

Garfield has the best excelled(MESA) programs as far HS goes in Seattle.

I think his point was that a lot of colleges dont' find it to be a "credible" high school.

I went to Shorecrest and this cat that use to cut my hair when I actually had short hair use to go to Garfield. I dunno if you know Dre (he own's D and J'z, even though John left years ago)...

Anyway, I got into college no problem...Dre use to play football and go to school...he didn't get anywhere. He was talking about having his nephew go to Shorecrest, cause colleges look at that school and for some reason feel it's "better."

I've been told it's one of the harder schools, even if you're not in honors classes or whatever they're called in HS....

I could be wrong though..

White Garfield (aka the program you're talking about) is one of the best public schools in the state.

Black Garfield is not.

A big point of this thread is just the regional perspective I want folks to have. This is a predominantly west coast message board, I just want people to realize that while black people definitely don't have their fair share out west, it is much worse in other parts of the country, so they should be thankful for what they have out here.

Everyone should be thankful for what they have, regardless.

Nice thread though, it is educational, which is somewhat rare...and yours is your original work, so that makes it a little better too...it's not like you went online and found some shit to post up and make people argue...

Yep it is. Appreciate the props, it is satisfying when the people reading it actually understand what it means, including its limitations.
