In an expected move the Bills parted ways with veteran safety Troy Vincent Thursday. Vincent, who has been rehabbing his injured hamstring since the Week One game at New England, was healthy and able to pass a physical this week prompting his termination.

Sitting on injured reserve minor since Sept. 13, Vincent by league rule had to be terminated by the Bills once he passed said physical.

Vincent is now a free agent and can be signed by any of the other 31 NFL teams. Under no circumstances however, can Vincent be re-signed by the Bills this season according to league rules.

Had Vincent been released any time after next Tuesday he would have had to go through the waiver process, where with his Bills contract in tow he would have been available to any of the 31 other teams. If he cleared waivers he would then be a free agent capable of signing with any team.

When he was put on injured reserve last month Vincent stated he was at peace with the decision made by the organization.

"I understand the nature of the business and I understand that injuries come along with the business," he said. "I'm a big boy, I know the ins and outs. And I understand what is best for the team and to not be selfish."

When asked if it could mean the end of his stellar NFL career, Vincent wasn't prepared to consider that yet.

"I don't know if it's a career decision," he said. "I'll sit back and think about where I go from here."

While rehabbing at the Bills facility for the past month, Vincent continued to sit in team meetings and worked with rookie safeties Donte Whitner and Ko Simpson to teach them some of the nuances of studying film and of the game.

That's what we as veterans are supposed to do," Vincent said. "That's part of who I am and how I'm made up and I refuse to turn my back on them. They'll become pros sooner than later."

Vincent was in his third season with Buffalo and started and played in 24 games between 2004-2006. The 15-year veteran was tied for the team lead in interceptions last season with four and set a career-high in tackles with 102.

He entered the 2006 campaign as the league leader in career interceptions (47) among active players.

Frisco should sign him for the sole purpose of veteran leadership...he's been hurt so no one really knows what he can do. plus he's old, you dont want to start signing players just because of their names(see the team right across the bay from you) bring him in and let him mentor the younger players, dont break the bank on him. niners got something good going, just be patient

Niners hope to sign Troy Vincent
Matt Maiocco

The 49ers are hotly pursuing five-time Pro Bowl defensive back Troy Vincent, two league sources told The Press Democrat today.

"It's safe to say the 49ers are interested, certainly interested," a source said. "But I think there will be other teams involved in it."

Vincent, a highly respected 15-year NFL veteran whom the Bills released earlier today, is free to sign with any team. The 49ers believe there will be competition for his services. They are prepared to offer Vincent a two-year contract to secure his services, one source said.

The 49ers are $7.523 million under the salary cap, giving the organization plenty of room to work out a deal for Vincent.

Vincent, 35, who was placed on injured reserve-minor on Sept. 13, is recovering from a left hamstring strain. After the Bills placed him on IR, he could not return to play for them this season. Buffalo had hoped Vincent would retire, but he requested his release because he had become healthy enough to play.

"I'm ready to go," Vincent told the Associated Press. "To be fair, it was the right time for me. ... Now's the time for me to look at where I'm at. And I still want to play some football."

The 49ers are believed to view Vincent as a free safety who can help the team's nickel defense. The 49ers' pass defense is ranked 25th in the league, yielding an average of 224.0 yards a game. Last week, the Raiders, who entered the game averaging just 70.3 yards passing a game, rolled up 216 passing yards on the 49ers.

Vincent would be an acquisition along the lines of guard Larry Allen and cornerback Walt "Anti-Kwame" Harris. The 49ers pounced on those veteran players in March after they were released by the Cowboys and Redskins, respectively.

Its not like he would be a L/RCB having to cover the number 1 or 2 receiver. IF I am not mistaken, he is a SS. I think ti would be a good pickup. He had 100+ tackles last year. He can help a team. Not all SS can be Ed Reed 9 INT catching safeties.
