YES.. AND I STILL THINK PAC WASNT THAT GREAT OF A LYRICIST.. AND STORYTELLING TO ME DOESNT FALL UNDER 'LYRICIST''

PAC WAS A GOOD RAPPER AND NOT THAT BAD OF A LYRICIST EITHER BUT PEOPLE LIKED HIM CUZ OF THE SHIT HE SPOKE ON AND HIS WAY OF PUTTING HIS LIFE ON WAX.. NOT CUZ HE WAS SUCH A DOPE LYRICIST.. EVEN THO HE WAS A BETTER LYRICIST THEN HALF THE RAPPERS OUT TODAY.. A

LL THAT SHIT YOU MENTIONED LIKE ASSONANCE AND PERSONIFICATION ARE ALSO FACTORS THAT PLAY ALONG WITH BEING A GOOD LYRICIST BUT IF YOU LISTEN TO PAC SOMETIMES HIS RHYMEPATTERNS WERE REAL BASIC.. HE MORE OFTEN THEN NOT HE KEPT IT SIMPLE NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT IF YOU HAVE OTHER QUALITIES YOU CAN COMPENSATE WITH WHICH PAC HAD.. HE STILL ONE OF THE DOPEST OF ALL TIME.. BUT WHEN PEOLE SAY HE WAS THE DOPEST LYRICIST EVER OR PUT NAMES LIKE KEAK AND J STALIN I CONVERSATIONS ABOUT LYRICISTS ITS CLEAR THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY TALKING ABOUT
Well that's your opinion. See when you talk about Pac you gotta understand he had atleast 300 songs done that he never got to put out himself when he died. If you include these unreleased songs with his released catalog he definitely has the lyrical edge over anyone in the Bay Area.
I think Locksmith is ok but some shit I heard by him is mad corny, close to garbage, bubblegum, popcorn rap.
Imo Keep Ya Head Up is better than Locksmith's whole career so far.
So my opinion is that Pac is the best lyricist ever from the Bay Area.
Honorable mentions to E-40, Quinn, Hitman, Seff the Gaffla, Yukmouth.

We understand what your saying. Your talking about the complexity and wittiness and creativeness of his written lyric. We get it. HOWEVER, I beg to differ. A lyricist is simply a person who writes lyrics. People make the decision to write about different things. Just because he didn't focus on silly battle raps or technical word play or multi syllable rhyme structures, doesn't mean he wasn't one of the best writers. He just didn't over-saturate his lyrical content with that, but if you listen, he has many many great lines. Pac is responsible for one of the hardest most popular diss tracks of all time. Pac could write an entire song in just minutes, we all know this, he had that natural ability. Pac wrote POETRY, he has books published where people can read his poetry. That's a lyricist! You have to think about the whole picture when you talk about artists like Pac, or Biggie, or Big L or whatever. I feel what your saying, but it doesn't really hold much merit to todays game.

All successful artists stick to the basics, and keep it basic. If he was busy all the time thinking up a witty metaphor or punchline or working on a really complex type of song "lyrically" do you really think he would of got so much real work done?

And who's the best?

Exactly.

Besides, Pac was from NY originally. This discussion is about CURRENT Bay artists.

I dont even know why I responded to the Hubcat guy. He thinks Locksmith is the best lyricist in the Bay. I think that says enough about his musical opinion.
