Seattle signed third baseman Adrian Beltre to a five-year deal Thursday, ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting. The contract, which one source told Gammons is worth $64 million, comes one day after the Mariners agreed to a four-year, $50 million deal with Richie Sexson.
Beltre's former team, the Dodgers, offered a six-year deal with an option for a seventh year, but at less money per year, according to Gammons, who noted that the Seattle deal averages $12.8 million per year.
Beltre, 25, had a breakout season for Los Angeles in 2004, hitting .334 with a major league-leading 48 home runs -- four more than his total of the previous two seasons combined -- and 121 RBI. He hit twice as many home runs as Bret Boone, who led the Mariners with 24 homers last season.
A career .262 hitter entering 2004, Beltre finished second in the National League Most Valuable Player voting to Barry Bonds and set career highs in virtually every offensive category last season. Despite being hobbled by an ankle injury, he scored 104 runs -- more than twice as many as he scored in 2003.
Beltre also did the job defensively, leading NL third basemen with a .978 fielding percentage.
Led by Beltre, the Dodgers won the National League West Division title before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Division Series.
The powerful additions of Beltre and Sexson figure to lead the Mariners back to prominence in the American League West following a 99-loss season that cost manager Bob Melvin his job. Prior to 2004, Seattle produced four straight 90-win seasons, including a franchise-record 116 victories in 2001.
Last season, the Mariners were outhomered by opponents, 212-136.

It'll be tough for him to top last season playing in Seattle, but it's still big for them. Last season when Seattle shook up their lineup a little, got rid of Olerud, called up some minor league players, etc., they suddenly started playing better than any other team in the AL West. It could have been a fluke I guess but it looks like Seattle is gonna be tough next year.
